Zuri’s Sweet Shop has now opened at Harambe Market, the quick-service food area at Disney’s Animal Kingdom (DAK), part of the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. The new merchandise location, in the Africa section of the park, sells a variety of snacks and easy-to-eat foods, as well as home decor and kitchen items.
Zuri’s carries 80 exclusive food items, which are inspired by the sights, sounds and flavors of Africa. It boasts a confectionery case that offers guests a large selection variety of candies and baked treats. Guests can nibble on tiger-shaped sugar cookies, elephant-shaped caramel apples and animal-shaped lollipops. Or they can stick with Disney confectionery classics, such as Mickey Mouse chocolate chip cookies, cotton candy, and chocolate fudge. Oh, and animal crackers, naturally.
One of Zuri Sweet Shop’s more unusual items Walt Disney World foodies should add to their “must try” food list are the “Match the Species” poop treats. These snacks are designed to resemble the dung of four different animals found at DAK. Despite their, erm, realistic appearance, these “Match the Species” poop treats really are sweet snacks and not a practical joke.
- Cotton-Top Tamarin: Pretzel pearls coated in chocolate peanut butter fudge with sweet rolled oat flakes.
- Elephant: Chocolate peanut butter fudge with sweet rolled oats and yellow coconut flakes.
- Giraffe: Rolled chocolate fudgy browning and freshly made caramel.
- Hippo: Chocolate fudge caramel brownie with peanut butter and rolled oats.
The “Match the Species” treats (depicted in the article’s feature photo on the confectionery case’s second shelf) currently sell for $3.99 each, at sizes big enough to share. As Zuri’s participates in the Disney Dining Plan, guests may also use one snack credit to sample one of these scatological snacks.
Update, June 29: Zuri’s no longer offers the “Match the Species” treats. Disney says their availability was part of a merchandise pilot.
The shop also offers its own twist on such commonly found Disney snacks, including a variety of decorated candy apples, bulk trail mixes, chocolate bars (with unique flavors and add-ins), and popcorn (made with African spices). Disney guests who enjoy DAK’s Flame Tree Barbeque will also find the restaurant’s signature sweet and spicy sauce at Zuri’s, as well as an African spice rubs and a gourmet cocoa set.
In addition to its themed food items, Zuri’s Sweets Shop also offers home merchandise. The shop carries decorative items such as “Blessing Baskets,” cookbooks, as well as African-inspired dinnerware and décor.
