The thing that means more to Floyd Mayweather than the zero in his 47-0 record as a professional boxer, is the money he makes for these fights. His philosophy is simply, “My daughter can spend the zeros, but she cannot do anything with the zero in my record. My goal is to make money for my kids and their kids. I never cared about winning each fight. The undefeated record does not mean anything to me.” His nickname of Money Mayweather fits the bill. Forbes has Floyd as the highest paid athlete today and maybe of all time.
It is said that the great athletes in all sports are not afraid to fail. In basketball, they want to take the last shot. In baseball, they want to be up at bat in clutch situations or have the ball hit to them with pressure on the line. Mayweather has been a world champion for most of 19 years. He has fought high priced and high pressure fights, such as the fight against Manny Pacquiao tonight in Las Vegas, on many occasions. He has said many times that he does not think about losing. He knows it could happen, but if he is prepared, he says he will be hard to beat. “I have been in many of these types of events. The one thing I know how to do is box. I have been boxing most of my days on this earth. I have a six fight deal with Showtime and I am a man of my word. In September, I will fight my last fight,” says Mayweather. It will be his 49th fight. When asked, why not round off his career with an even 50 fights, he says,”Why should I. The round number of 50 does not mean anything to me.”
A reporter mentioned that his father, Floyd, Sr. hopes that his son would stop fighting as soon as possible. “My father is right. I have all of my faculties. I have not been hit a lot and maybe I should stop fighting.” Mayweather went on to say, “I don’t have anything negative to say about Manny or his trainer Freddy Roach. They are just another opponent.” Fans at times, will root against Mayweather for some of his past transgressions outside the ring. There were protesters outside of the MGM Grand hotel with signs referring to Mayweather’s history with domestic violence. “I have done some stuff in my past. I have blown millions of dollars. I have matured a lot. I am approaching the big 4 0. I have learned lessons in life. My kids are the most important thing in my life. I will make sure they have the best schools and everything they need in their life.” Both fighters made the weight for the welterweight division. Floyd is 2 inches taller than Manny and has a 5 inch reach advantage. “I have fought fighters bigger than me most of my career. I will be ready for Saturday night”, says Pacquiao, right after the official weigh in yesterday. Please subscribe and follow boxing up close.
