From August 2014 to June 2015, players of the YU-GI-OH! Trading Card Game in North America competed in regional tournaments and ‘YU-GI-OH!’ Championship Series (YCS) tournaments to earn an invitation to the 2015 ‘YU-GI-OH!’ North American World Championship Qualifier tournament. The 2015 NA WCQ took place at the Music City Center in Nashville, Tennessee from Friday, June 26, 2015 to Sunday, June 28, 2015. Players from Canada, United States of America, and North American territories who earned invitations over the past year participated in the main event.
On Friday, June 26, 2015, players had the opportunity to do various activites. From 12:00pm CST to 7:00pm CST, players who earned invitations to the 2015 NA WCQ registered for the main event. Players handed in a registration form and their deck list to register for the main event. Once a player registered for the main event, they received an exclusive playmat and a pack of World Championship Qualifier sleeves as participation prizes. In addition to registering for the main event, there were numerous public events for players to participate in. One public event that was popular among players was the Last Chance Qualifier. Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) tournaments were for players who did not have an invitation to the 2015 NA WCQ. LCQ tournaments were the last opportunity for players to participate in the next day’s main event. The winner of each LCQ tournament earned an invitation to participate in the 2015 NA WCQ.
Day 1 of the 2015 NA WCQ main event began on Saturday, June 27, 2015. Registration for the main event continued from 7:00am CST to 9:45am CST. Players handed in a registration form and their deck list to register for the main event. Once a player registered for the main event, they received an exclusive playmat and a pack of World Championship Qualifier sleeves as participation prizes. At the start of round 1, Darren Dunstan, the voice of Maximillion Pegasus from the ‘YU-GI-OH!’ animated television series, and Jonathan Todd Ross, the voice of Marik Ishtar from the ‘YU-GI-OH!’ animated television series, announced that there were 2060 players registered for the 2015 NA WCQ main event. Day 1 of the main event consisted of 9 rounds of best 2-out-of-3 non-elimination match play. The top 256 finishers of day 1 qualified for day 2 of the main event. In addition to the main event, players who were not in the main event participated in public events. One public event that interested some players was the Ultimate Pegasus Challenge. Players used decks that followed the April 1, 2015 forbidden/limited list in the Ultimate Pegasus Challenge tournament, but there was a catch. Every few minutes, Darren Dunstan as Maximillion Pegasus would announce rules that players had to follow during their match. Each new rule succeeded the previous rule in the Ultimate Pegasus Challenge tournament.
Day 2 of the 2015 NA WCQ main event began on Sunday, June 28, 2015 at 9:00am CST. The non-elimination portion of day 2 of the main event consisted of 3 rounds of best 2-out-of-3 match play. After round 12, the top 64 finishers advanced to the single elimination portion of the main event. The final round of the main event was between Chase Cunningham and Noah Greene. Both players were using Burning Abyss decks. Noah Greene became the 2015 North American champion of the YU-GI-OH! Trading Card Game by defeating Chase Cunningham in the final round of the main event, 2 games to 0. There were various decks in the top 64. The top 64 consisted of:
13 Burning Abyss
3 Ritual Beast
The top 6 finishers of the 2015 NA WCQ will represent North America in the 2015 ‘YU-GI-OH!’ World Championship in Kyoto, Japan in August 2015.
