At 15-years-old, Eco-hip-hop artist “Kid Warrior” as seen in the attached video, twenty other youths, climate scientist Dr. James Hansen, and Earth Guardians have sued the Federal Government and the President for fossil fuel exploitation. Read the suit details on the website.
The group challenges the government’s continued extraction, transportation, export, and combustion of fossil fuels with the knowledge that it gravely harms the future of today’s youth as well as that of coming generations. They also accuse the government of allowing destruction of the United States climate system and demand reduction of carbon dioxide emissions.
Xiuhtezcatl Martinez said at the United Nations High-Level climate change event, “The Federal Government has known for decades that CO2 pollution from burning fossil fuels was causing global warming and dangerous climate change. It also knew that continuing to burn fossil fuels would destabilize our climate system, significantly harming my generation and generations to come. Despite knowing these dangers, Defendants did nothing to prevent this harm. In fact, my Government increased the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere to levels it knew were unsafe.”
Since the United States has reached its danger point, the group ordered President Obama to implement a more sustainable national plan to restore atmospheric levels. If the excessive carbon dioxide emission levels continue, the planet will become uninhabitable.
Martinez says that his generation will either be the one that destroyed the planet or resolved this great issue. The youth like him can no longer rely on the adults who have the power and money. His generation must use their energy and creativity to make changes.
Colorado-based nonprofit Earth Guardians, along with other groups on five continents, are working together to protect the Earth and create sustainable communities. It is a gathering of “young activists, artists and musicians from across the globe stepping up as leaders and co-creating the future we know is possible.” It empowers youth as leaders to amplify their impact.
