Have you ever dreamed of being a millionaire? At some point whether we’re contemplating winning the lottery with our newly purchased ticket or wondering how it would feel to not have to worry about earning a living, we all imagine ourselves with untold wealth. It’s a powerful motivational tool as seen by the popularity of the Millionaire Mind Intensive Seminars based on the work of T. Harv Ecker.
How about networking with millionaires? Well that’s something you can aspire to and in fact, Christopher Kai, international speaker and networking expert, has written a book with all the information you need to put this into practice. He is the author of “Big Game Hunting: Networking with Billionaires, Executives and Celebrities”.
Kai’s book is full of down to earth good advice about networking in general. He gives simple steps to follow when attending an event, how to do research, how to dress and how to behave in the presence of these awe-inspiring moguls who are just human beings like anyone else. Even more important, Kai elaborates on how to make use of these high-powered connections to create positive change in the world. He tells the story of how he was able to convince Elon Musk (SpaceX and Tesla Motors) to visit Mondays at the Mission, a homeless youth program he founded which is held at the Union Rescue Mission in Los Angeles.
One of the key concepts is to research the person and the event, preparation is very important. Another point is to attend networking events regularly. When attending, you should go alone so that you are forced to mingle. If you do attend with a colleague, you should make sure that they have the same interests in meeting people. If you just spend time chatting with your companion, it defeats the purpose you are there to accomplish. Cultivate new relationships, but be sure to follow up with these connections to keep them meaningful and relevant. Christopher Kai believes in a ten year plan. If he is going to get to know someone, he wants it to be for the long term. Even if you are not after a big gamer, this book is a manual on how to network properly. The idea of targeting your networking is a topic covered by other authors, such as Thomas Stanley, “Networking with Millionaires”, who emphasized how to build a fortune through networking and good business sense. His body of work on the subject was gathered through extensive focus groups conducted on marketing to the affluent. Another approach comes from Michael Ellsberg, “The Education of Millionaires: It’s Not What You Think and It’s Not Too Late”. Ellsberg interviewed millionaires and billionaires who did not have much formal education.
There is much to be learned from these principles even if you are not going to pitch millionaires. It comes down to good common networking sense such as preparing yourself through research, knowing what you want to discuss, building a relationships that go further than a few networking events. Finally, make sure your desire to render service is clearly communicated. Appealing to a higher calling through creating positive change should be the cornerstone of your personal brand.
