Traditional wisdom says you need both. Now research says exercise won’t lose you weight, reported Scientific American August 11. But Coca-Cola funds an anti-diet weight loss program that says exercise is all you need. Well, the proof is in the pudge, or lack thereof. How does it work? Ignore the doctors’ advice. Beyond the recommendation to lose weight, ignore instructions to try weight loss drugs or have various kinds of surgery before you give dieting a shot. Count calories and control portions. Aim to eat 1,100 to 1,450 calories a day. Multiply goal weight by 11 for total calorie count. Some obesity experts say everyone should eat no more than 1,300 calories per day regardless of gender, activity level or height. Eat a lot of fruit and vegetables, very little starch (bread, pasta, rice, potatoes), lean meat, fish, dark chocolate, Greek yogurt, light dairy and seeds. Give up soda pop of any kind.
