NASCAR Hall of Fame driver Richard Petty surprised John Mack, Chief Operating Officer at the YMCA of Bristol, with a $1,000 Food City gift card towards the purchase of groceries, courtesy of Nathan’s Famous as part of its Ready. Set. PLAY initiative. The presentation was made Saturday afternoon before the start of the Irwin Tools Night race at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Guests from the YMCA of Bristol were greeted at the speedway by the Richard Petty Motorsports team and escorted to the garage area to meet the big man, himself. Those in attendance then stayed to cheer on RPM driver Aric Almirola compete. Unfortunately his # 43 Smithfield Ford Fusion didn’t handle quite like he wanted, and he came in 14th, but that didn’t seem to matter to the group.
“We had a great time at the race track on Saturday and really appreciate all that Nathan’s Famous did for us,” said Mack. “They really surprised us with our visit with Richard Petty. I know that’s something that our kids will never forget. We can’t thank them enough for the groceries from Food City. That will be a huge help as we have several events coming up and are operating on a tight budget.”
The Ready. Set. PLAY. initiative is a partnership created in 2014 by Nathan’s Famous with KaBOOM!. Ready. Set. PLAY. celebrates play and the local leaders who are making active play possible in communities across the country..
“Nathan’s Famous is all about fun, family and community,” said Mike Paribello, Sr. Director of Marketing, Nathan’s Famous. “We are really proud of our Ready. Set. PLAY. partnership with KaBOOM! and are thrilled to champion active play by donating $1,000 of free groceries from Food City to the YMCA of Bristol.” He also noted that KaBOOM! worked with the YMCA of Bristol for a playground build at Anderson Park in 2010.
KaBOOM! is the national non-profit dedicated to giving all kids particularly those growing up in poverty in America the “childhood they deserve filled with balanced and active play,” so they can thrive. .Since 1996, it has collaborated with partners to build, open or improve nearly 16,300 playgrounds, engaged more than one million volunteers and served 8.1 million kids. In fact, KaBOOM! worked with the YMCA of Bristol for a playground build at Anderson Park in 2010.
“It’s good to see our partner Nathan’s Famous giving back to organizations that allow kids the opportunity to be active,” stated Petty. “Every child deserves the right to play and today’s grant will help an organization like the YMCA of Bristol keep moving forward.”
