While it’s a good thing for companies to be aware of their competitors in a market, it’s more important for companies to focus on themselves and the business they are doing. Gaming sees a lot of similarities in the types of games that are created, but it is still essential for companies like Microsoft to maintain their own vision.
It’s hard to deny Sony’s success, as they have started this new generation with unprecedented success for the PS4. Microsoft’s success hasn’t been to shabby either with the Xbox One, but still, fans consistently want to know what each side has to say about the other. Phil Spencer, who is the head of Xbox, spoke about what Sony has done and what Microsoft must do in order to continue to build on what the Xbox One has achieved.
“Honestly, I think it’s about growing Xbox. Sony’s had great success with PlayStation, they’ve earned that success over multiple decades of building a great product. Kudos to them for their market position. All I can do is focus on Xbox, and I love that. I love our fans and the partners we have. We’re growing Xbox year on year, we’re bigger than we were this time in the 360 generation, so generation over generation we’re in a better spot, year over year we’re in a better spot,” Spencer told Eurogamer.
It has become an inherent thing in the gaming industry; to compare one product with another, but for Microsoft, they’ve done a solid job of controlling what they can control. Keeping their heads down and focusing on delivering quality content has resulted in a better mind share with gamers, and the Xbox One price drop didn’t hurt either.
The lack of dominance in Europe has been well-documented for Xbox One and the company knows they must improve in order to achieve a great market share. Spencer cited bringing a great show to Gamescom as being a very important part of continuing to build a better relationship with European gamers.
“We’ve got more work to do in central Europe, there’s no doubt about that, especially in southern Europe and areas where we’ve traditionally not been that strong. Coming to Gamescom is really important, to make sure we’re here this year, we’re doing a press briefing and showing new fresh content, working with studios here on delivering content that helps to build culturally diverse content, and having genre diversity in what’s coming out is also a big focus of ours,” Spencer said.
This fall will be a massive time of year for Microsoft as they have a number of major exclusives launching. Next Tuesday and this September, October and November all have at least one major Xbox One exclusive launching (Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Forza Motorsport 6, Halo 5: Guardians and Rise of the Tomb Raider), so it could be another big chance for the console to gain ground on the PS4.
