On July 8, 2015, “The X Factor” U.K. judges and hosts of 2015 made their first public appearance together at auditions at Eventcity in Manchester, England. It was also the first public appearance of Simon Cowell since the death of his mother, Julie, who reportedly died of a stroke on July 5, 2015. She was 89.
As previously reported, “X Factor” auditions that were to take place July 6 and July 7, 2015 at Eventcity in Manchester, England, were cancelled because of the death of Simon Cowell’s mother, Julie, Instead, the auditions took place on the previously scheduled dates of July 8 and July 9, 2015. Auditions that were to take place at Wembley Arena in London on July 14 have been cancelled, according to an announcement made by the show. However, auditions at Wembley Arena on July 15, July 16 and July 17, 2015, will continue as scheduled.
Applause Store, which handles tickets for the auditions, issued this statement to people who had tickets for the July 14 auditions: “We are so sorry but it has just been confirmed to us that both recordings of The X Factor auditions in London on Tuesday 14th July have been cancelled due to a bereavement. The rest of the auditions are still going ahead. Please make a request now for a different available date/time and get priority tickets! We really apologise for obvious inconvenience this must be causing you, but the situation is entirely out of our control. We thank you for your understanding.”
Cowell is a creator/executive producer of “The X Factor” U.K., which he launched in 2004. He left the show’s judging panel in 2011 to become a judge on “The X Factor” U.S., and he returned to “The X Factor” U.K. judging panel in 2014 after “The X Factor” U.S. was cancelled. In 2015, “The X Factor” U.K.’s other judges are Cowell, Rita Ora, Nick Grimshaw and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini. In 2015, “The X Factor” U.K. hosts are Olly Murs and Caroline Flack. According to E! News, the Cowell family released this statement on July 5, 2015: “Today our beloved mum Julie passed away. Anyone who had met her would know what a truly special and kind lady she was. We are heartbroken and will miss her terribly, but she is now at peace.”
A Cowell spokesperson added, “We would like to thank the media for kindly respecting Julie’s privacy throughout and we politely request continued privacy for the entire family at this particularly difficult time.”
Simon was very close to his mother and is no doubt devastated by this loss. His father, Eric, died of a heart attack in 1999. Simon named his son Eric (who was born on Feb. 14, 2014) after his father.
Simon Cowell’s brother Tony tweeted on July 5, 2015: “Very sad night tonight. We will all miss Mum so very much. She was the heart and soul of our family.”
Julie Cowell, a former dancer, is survived by her sons Simon, Tony, Michael and Nicholas, as well as her stepchildren John and June.
