According to MSN News on Tuesday, an Australian woman in Abu Dhabi was jailed for a Facebook post of a picture of a vehicle blocking a disabled area near her apartment. The arrested went by the name of Jodi Magi for writing “bad words” to the social media site.
The artist, at the age of 39, was found guilty during a trail a month ago. When she went to pay her fine at an Abu Dhabi court, officials had detained Magi. She was then led to a male lock-up, but then was turned away. Magi claimed that no one could figure out where to put her. There was no further details given to her in regards to her situation and Magi said she had “been driving around for literally about four hours.”
The picture in question showed a vehicle lacking in disabled labeling. It was blocking two disabled parking spots at her apartment complex. The vehicle could not be identified due to the licence plate being blacked out. The photo has since been removed as it was posted back in February. Magi also has a personal website explaining her reason for being in Abu Dhabi. Apparently, she’s there for the purpose of teaching Emirati women graphic design. She had moved there in 2012 and attended Zayed University for the purpose of her work.
Magi stated that she had “pleaded” for help from the government of Australia as well as the The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. So far, she’s received only minimal assistance. Magi contends that the country is likely more concerned about business than about its citizens and having no interest any further.
