After battling in camp and throughout the preseason with Luke Bowanko, Stefen Wisniewski was named the Jaguars starting center on Monday, ahead of Friday’s preseason game against Detroit. Wisniewski is happy the completion is over and is ready to go.
“It was always my goal to be a starter and excited that happened today,” Wisniewski told reporters on Monday. “I felt pretty good against Pittsburgh too, but certainly another week of practice helped me.” Jaguars Head Coach Gus Bradley said the decision came down to consistency and experience in the end. “It was a very difficult decision,” he said. “It was a very difficult decision the way Bo was playing, because he did a lot of good things. I think just for the teams’ sake, where we’re at, when we watched and evaluated him, he just had the edge.”
Rookie running back T.J. Yeldon, whose sprained finger has caused him to miss the first two preseason games, was on the field Monday, minus the red non-contact jersey that he’s been sporting for the last couple weeks. He is expected to see his first game action on Friday. “I’m very excited, my first NFL game and I’ve been waiting for this since I was little,” Yeldon told Jaguars.com on Monday. “I’m excited to get out there with the guys. I don’t show much emotion, but inside, I’m excited to be out there.” Yeldon said he will play Friday with a protective pad on that injured finger.
With Friday’s preseason game being the third of four, the starters are expected to see a lot of time. For the most part, it will be treated as a normal game and as always, the key is to get everyone off the field healthy at the end of the night, especially considering the Jaguars have a long list of injuries that grew longer on Monday. Jaguars’ wide receiver Arrelious Benn was placed on injured reserve with a broken collarbone Monday, sustained against the Giants Saturday. Wide receiver Damian Copeland, who missed all of 2014, dislocated his shoulder. The team waived injured offensive lineman Brennan Williams. Those moves opened a couple roster spots and they were quickly filled with the signings of third-year linebacker Mister Alexander and rookie offensive lineman Will Corbin.
According to John Oehser of Jaguars.com, The team will have a “normal Thursday” practice Tuesday with a shorter, lighter “Friday” practice Wednesday. The team’s walkthrough will be Thursday followed by the Friday game at EverBank Field.
