The Physician is a Drama/Adventure film that focuses around one boy and his quest to solve the mysteries of human anatomy; and the cures to illnesses. Rob is the main character, and he, his mother and two siblings live in squalor. Rob goes to the mine daily to work. When he is 9 years old he loses his mother to side sickness, which may refer to a burst appendix since it is called side sickness. The movie takes place at first in England, during Medieval times when “Barbers” were the main source of any medical help. Rob has the unique ability to feel when death is coming to someone, by touch. He touches his mother and sees her death. He is desperate to heal her. After she dies, it motivates Rob even more to learn how to cure illnesses. He apprentices with a barber that had been in town, (Stellan Skarsgard) and for many years until he is around eighteen years old they travel around England selling their cures. It is only when Rob and his Master experience true medical help that Rob learns of Ibn Sina and decides he must make the long year journey to Persia. A Jewish doctor, a student of Ibn Sina, cures blindness in Rob’s master. The miracle is amazing, and the movie portrays this wonder well. The movie makes sure to highlight that England was in a barbaric state of medicine and that on the other side of the world in Persia the world of medicine has become highly advanced.
Rob’s journey becomes difficult, Englishman are not allowed in Persia, so Rob is forced to disguise himself as a Jew in order to learn from Ibn Sina. He works hard through a plague and proves himself to be a knowledgeable student, and even Ibn Sina is impressed. Rob has but one flaw, he wants to know exactly how the human body works. The research done is focused on dogs. At the time, it was believed that humans and dogs shared the same organs in the same places. Rob mentions there are plenty of corpses to study, however, he is reminded by Ibn Sina that the act of deforming a dead corpse is against God’s laws.
The movie starts off good, but by the middle of the movie it is a waiting game. When Rob finally arrives in Persia things get more interesting, especially hearing some of the theories Ibn Sina shares. Hearing explanations, from Hippocrates, and other great scientists gave the movie an authentic feel. It has a very good cast including “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” Stellan Skarsgard, “Schindler’s List” Ben Kingsley, and Tom Payne “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day”.
The movie came out in 2013 and carries a 7.3 out of 10 according to IMDB.com and though they were nominated the film never won an award. Even without awards the film is still a climactic adventure and is eye opening to watch.
