I’m all for technology and all for being able to do many things on your cell phone other than making calls, sending and reading emails, and texting, but there are some things that I think go beyond the scope of mobile phone usage.
For example, I was on my way to work one day a few weeks ago, listening to my favorite news station, when I heard a story about a new technology that allows your friends to know where you are if you happen to be in the vicinity of each other. I don’t know about you guys, but I always thought that if I wanted someone to know where I was hanging out, I would tell them!
I also have to admit, that I think having your location services turned on when using your mobile phone is also a little creepy, and I don’t particularly like the idea of some app knowing or wanting to know my exact location, whether I need to find directions or not. So, back to my original question, and the basis of this article, “when is too much cell phone tech too much”?
Apparently, there are a few apps that utilize this technology. One of the apps is called Nowy (www.nowy.com). The claims not to have you tracked via the internet or GPS, but through something called Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), which enables Smartphone’s to detect each other when they are in close proximity of each other. You can also use your Facebook account to sign into the app.
Another app of this type is called Swarm (www.swarmapp.com). It also allows users to share their current locations. This app is a spin-off of the app called Foursquare. With Swarm, users can check in at locations and also make future plans with friends that you find out are nearby.
Tag (www.gettagapp.com) is one more of these types of apps that utilize this technology. Selectively share your location with your closest friends with this app. Once you have the app installed and ready to go, one just simply taps on a friend’s name, and instantly send them a message letting them know where you are.
As I stated earlier, I am all about tech and how it can make our lives easier and more enjoyable, but like the title of my article states, when is too much tech too much? Do we really need an app that can pinpoint our very locations and making it that easy to find us or even for someone not so nice, track us down? Hey, I am all about communicating the old fashion way, as in actually picking up the phone, dialing, and making a shout out to my friends and families, and also hearing their voices!
Don’t get me wrong, technology can be a beautiful thing, but it has its place. I’ve been around cutting edge tech for more than half my life and career, so I am not one of those types that are being pushed into it and learning something new. I just hate to see us getting away from personal communication and just plain old fashion socializing. We don’t need an app for everything; spend more time with your family in friends in IRL or URL (IRL = In Real Life).
