Half of all men over the age of 50 will lose their hair and 40% of women also experience hair loss during their lifetime. In some cases, hair loss is only temporary, but for older men, male-pattern baldness is irreversible. It is possible to disguise hair loss with hair pieces, hats, and even wigs, but for many people, temporary measures are not an option, so they look for a more permanent solution.
A Permanent Hair Loss Solution
Hair transplants are a modern solution to permanent hair loss. There are many high-profile celebrities who have gone down this route, including Wayne Rooney and Christian Jesson from TV show, Embarrassing Bodies, but it is not a cheap option. However, if hair loss is affecting your self-esteem and you can’t bear the thought of going bald, here is a quick guide to the latest hair restoration techniques.
FUE and FUT
The two main techniques used these days are Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). Both are very effective and can restore hair growth in previous bald parts of the scalp.
FUT is a long-established gold standard treatment for hair loss. In this method, hair follicles are harvested from a donor area (typically the back of the head) in a single strip. They are then dissected into individual follicular units using a microscope.
FUE is a newer technique, whereby hair follicles are removed from the donor area using a robotic device.
Each procedure has its pros and cons. Patients had to endure a lot or discomfort and bleeding in older hair transplant treatments. Modern treatments are a lot less invasive and the discomfort is minimal. However, hair transplantation using FUE or FUT is time consuming and it can easily take an entire day to complete larger hair transplantations.
Which Treatment is Suitable for You?
FUT treatments are suitable for grey or lighter colored hair because the individual hair follicles can more easily be seen on the microscope. The end result is more natural looking than older hair transplant techniques and clinics often have great success with their patients.
FUE treatments are ideal for patients who don’t want a visible scar, so if you prefer to keep your hair nice and short, FUE is probably a better choice. They can also be used on patients where there is scarring from previous treatments or the patient has a tight scalp.
No Pain or Discomfort Post-Treatment
At the end of a hair transplant procedure, patients can go home and with just a hat on to protect their head. There is no need for bandages or dressings and there won’t be any unsightly blood. You can even wash your hair the next day.
Modern hair transplant solutions are highly effective these days and Dr. Jezic from a leading hair clinic says the results are so natural that many patients book treatments to take place during business trips, without telling their loved ones who are none the wiser when the patient later returns home.
