The PS4 and Xbox One have opened up new avenues of expression when it comes to game development. Thanks to increased horsepower and visual display capabilities, this console generation has ushered in new possibilities for developers to make their vision a reality. As a result, titles like Just Cause 3 can have more destruction and satisfying explosions, while the player experience has a bigger ‘Wow-factor’. atombash.com spoke to Omar Shakir, Content Producer, and Francesco Antolini, Principal Designer of Just Cause 3, about the PS4 and Xbox One and how these new consoles allow for new experiences that would have been impossible on last-gen consoles.
As technology advances, game developers are given new tools and means of creating more lively and interactive settings. Just Cause 3 greatly benefits from the hardware of the Xbox One and PS4 as it now allows for better animation, physicalized environments and objects, and a more interactive world to create intense action sequences. Francesco Antolini tells us that the while engine for Just Cause 3 has been rewritten from scratch, and this allows them to tap into the potential of the PS4 and Xbox One.
“This means more things like more animating in the explosions or tethering at the same time. It means that each and every bit of destruction that you see is procedurally programmed on the fly. Everything is made of parts, which are all physicalized, and then are attached together through real, physical constrains. This also means that each way you choose to destroy something, you will use a different type of destruction,” explained Antolini.
However, what does this mean for the player? Well, it means you’ll see more exciting and intense game situations. Omar Shakir shares with us one of the gameplay scenarios that is made possible only on PS4 and Xbox One in the form of a Spike Event – something that occurs after the player has laid waste to a good amount of the facility causing Di Ravello to call in reinforcement that are unique to that particular base.
“In this particular case, there was a giant assault chopper that came after me, so I shot down the chopper while dual tethering a guy to it. The chassis of the chopper exploded and the guy who was tethered must have gotten off a bullet because there were a bunch of barrels near me, and then everything started exploding on the ground. As the destroyed chassis was falling to the ground, because it’s physicalized, I actually sort of twitch grappled to it and wingsuit catapult myself off of it and get away from all of the explosions. That kind of thing probably wouldn’t have been possible on the last-generation of consoles.”
One word: Wow. That is some action-movie caliber stuff right there. Thanks to the rewritten game code and PS4/Xbox One, these type of experiences are only possible on this new generation of consoles. You’ll be able to experience them for yourself on Dec. 1 when Just Cause 3 sees release.
