“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). It is the very first verse of the Bible which is a foundation statement by God on the origin of the heaven (universe) and the earth. No man was there in the beginning except God. But to truly understand this verse you must first believe in God and truly seek Him by faith and God will reward you with knowledge of how everything began. “But without faith it is impossible to please him : for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6) . Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear” (Hebrews 11:3).
The first three words “In the beginning”, is the beginning of physical time which God created. Not for Himself, God is eternal. No time exists with Him. This time sets the stage for what God was going to do next. That is “God created”. God did not use evolution or the word evolved. It says “created”. Created is totally contrary to evolved. Creation was instantaneous. Evolved is something that needs a lot of time perhaps millions of years. First God created the heaven (universe) which was space. The first thing created in this space was earth. This earth He created was in the beginning stages of being developed to make it inhabitable for biological life and His ultimate creation : man (Isaiah 45:18). In this first verse, there is no explosion that started the ball rolling sort of speak. God started everything in the beginning by just speaking the Word. “By the word of the LORD were the heavens made, and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth” (Psalm 33:6). “For he spake and it was done, he commanded, and it stood fast” (Psalm 33:9). It only took six days (Genesis 1:1-31) to complete what God started in Genesis 1:1. Exodus 20:11 says nothing about a Creation before Genesis 1:1. It only talks about the six days of creation that started in Genesis 1:1 and ended in Genesis 1:31. “For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth , the sea, and all that in them is. and rested the seventh day: where the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.”
Earth was the first thing God created before the Sun, moon, other planets, and the stars beyond our solar system. Earth was in a “very good” condition at the end of day six (Genesis 1:31) and so were the other celestial bodies He created on the fourth day of creation week (Genesis 1:14-19). God said so and by faith I believe His words over man’s words. ” And God saw every thing he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day. Genesis 1:1-31 is doctrine and nothing should be added or taking away from the Creation.
