Whether you travel by car, plane, or train, you are doing it under an unwritten contract of behavior with your fellow wanderers. Most of the time, this contract is upheld, and you are off on your merry journey — sometimes you even make new friends. But occasionally, there are hiccups along the way. With this in mind, the travel-dating site, MissTravel.com has conducted a survey to determine what “The Biggest Travel Pet Peeve of 2015” is.
Do you have any guesses?
According to their survey of 58,000 respondents, the selfie stick has won the not so coveted title of “Biggest Pet Peeve.”
I find this fascinating. I don’t actually own a selfie stick, and I’ve never used one. Conceptually, I think it’s probably fairly useful. I travel a lot, and even when I do that with a travel partner, we never end up taking photos of ourselves in these places. I can see how having a device to commemorate your trip without finding a stranger to do it for you would be a nice change. However, I have heard the horror stories, including a number that seem to end with the death of the person taking the selfie, so clearly there are problems. And given that I’ve heard of people jumping up onto a theater stage to charge a phone (please, please, please tell me you’ve never done that), it’s clear that people may not be using the best judgment when pulling the old selfie stick out.
Curious about what else made the list?
The Biggest Travel Pet Peeves of 2015 (according to MissTravel.com respondents)
Rank – Pet Peeve – Percentage of Votes
- Selfie Sticks – 42%
- Hogging overhead compartments – 20%
- Using an iPad to take photos – 17%
- Distraction with Social Media – 12%
- Smelly food on airplanes – 7%
- Other – 2%
Now, while I haven’t had the bad luck of running into the selfie stick fiasco (yet), I am all too familiar with pet peeve #2. In fact, it would be my #1. Airline attendants tell everyone getting onto the plane not to put their coats or suit jackets into the overhead compartments until everyone has had a chance to stow their luggage. And yet what do I encounter every single time I fly? People who have taken up valuable cargo room with their loose garments. I understand that you might be hot, or you don’t want your suit jacket to be wrinkled, but I guarantee you that when the people behind you are forced to cram their bags on top of your jacket, you are going to wish you had followed the rules. The people who try to stuff full size luggage into those compartments are also anxiety-producing, but at least I get that they are trying to avoid the baggage fees (though this does people little good when their own bags that would fit properly are then checked due to a lack of room despite following the size restrictions). Honestly, this overhead compartment inconvenience has often made me reconsider flying to a destination (though there’s rarely a practical alternative).
What do you think? Is one of your biggest pet peeves on the list? Are you tired of sprawlers (ie the strangers who nap on you rather than next to you on flights), or is there another travel peeve that’s missing? Sound off in the comments!
