If you haven’t noticed, the portable external hard drive is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessit anyone who travels, takes their office with them each day or consumes, creates or uses various forms of data. From gamers to photographers or even lawyers, sales pros or students, the external hard drive needs to be available at all times.
Since 1970, Western Digital (WD) has been creating storage solutions for businesses and individuals that meet their varied demands. Today that means hard and solid state drives that store incredible amounts of data in the form of documents, pictures and secure data that doesn’t need to fall into the wrong hands.
So with reviewers glowing about the new WD My Passport Ultra portable drives it was time to see what all the fuss was about especially when it comes to having a dedicated hard drive for the Mac. WD’s My Passport drives come in 3 TB, 2 TB, 1 TB and 500 GB sizes that bear the “Ultra” designation. Of course they offer fast write speeds, but they also offer high security features that protect. They also feature 3.0 compatibility, so that means data transfer rates of up to 5 gigabits per second. Blazing fast when compared with a USB 2.0 only drive. This Mac drive is small and light and can fit in your pocket. One note about the Mac drives, is that I don’t see one in the 500GB size, but that’s no problem with the current price points of the 1 and 2TB models. A favorite feature of those that use the My Passports- the portability.
“With more photos being taken than ever before, it’s critical to have a high capacity, reliable external storage solution that you can carry everywhere,” explains Tony Tate, general manager and vice president of Content Storage Solutions at WD. “The latest generation My Passport drives deliver an easier automatic back-up experience, hardware-based encryption for security and higher capacities than ever before. Consumers can keep all their content in their pockets, while expressing their personal styles with the colors and WD Grip Pack.”
The My Passport can also come in handy as we run out of space on our desktop and laptop PC stations. No longer is 500GB enough for all our documents, pictures and videos and somethings you just don’t want to put up in the cloud. The My Passport Ultras let you store anything and everything and let you sleep at night, knowing everything is secure.
“More than money, jewelry and other valuables, the item most missed if ever lost or stolen is ones computer – and everything on it – so our goal in launching the next-generation of the popular My Passport drives is to encourage more consumers to protect their data before something happens,” said Jim Welsh, executive vice president and general manager of WD’s branded products and consumer electronics groups. “The new My Passport makes backing up and preserving one’s digital life easier, reliable and more secure than ever – it’s the perfect blend of monstrous capacity, reliability and user-friendly technology in a sleek form factor, now in five colors.”
The My Passports are available on Amazon.com and at retailers and carry a price tag ranging from from $79.99 up to $199.99. It’s a small price to pay for first rate portability and the productivity you will have knowing all your valuable files are just an arm’s reach away.
