This weekend’s box office was a hard one for the new release “Pan”, but a great one for “The Martian”, which took the top spot for the second week in a row. The drama starring Matt Damon as an astronaut stranded on Mars didn’t experience much of a drop-off between last weekend and this weekend, likely a result of the overwhelmingly positive word-of-mouth it appears to be receiving. “The Martian” came in first with $37 million—way far ahead of the competition, as “Hotel Transylvania 2” remained in second with $20.3 million.
“Pan”, meanwhile, debuted in third with only $15.5 million. The live-action retelling of “Peter Pan”—this film is actually an origin story of sorts—failed to grab an audience despite the story’s popularity. “Pan” has met with some controversy that could be part of the reason why it flopped—well, that and the fact that it has been met with mostly negative reviews. The casting of Caucasian actress Rooney Mara as the native princess Tiger Lily, as well as the discovery that Warner Brothers never paid the children’s hospital who owns the copyright to the story for their use of it, hasn’t sat well with a lot of potential moviegoers, some of whom are boycotting the film for those reasons.
“The Walk” expanded to theaters everywhere this weekend, bringing in a respectable—but not huge– $3.6 million, playing in around 2500 theaters nationwide. The drama about high-wire artist Philippe Petit jumped from eleventh to seventh in its second week of release.
As far as limited release films go, the Spanish-language comedy “Ladrones” had a big debut in 375 theaters, bringing in $1.35 million and just barely missing the top twelve, coming in thirteenth. The new biopic “Steve Jobs”, which has already been receiving major awards buzz, particularly for star Michael Fassbender, who plays the late Apple founder, opened in four theaters this weekend. It still grossed over half a million dollars just in those four theaters, and will continue to expand to more theaters nationwide over the coming weeks.
