“Jurassic World” held off challengers at the box office this weekend to be number one for the third weekend in a row. The movie still continues to perform strongly at the box office, this weekend topping it with $54.2 million. However, it was almost bested by another strong contender. Pixar’s animated feature “Inside Out”, which set records in its debut weekend last week despite not being number one, followed close behind in second with $52.1 million.
Meanwhile, “Ted 2” performed the best out of this weekend’s new releases, opening in third with $33 million. The comedy written and directed by Seth MacFarlane continues the adventures of the living teddy bear and his human friend (played by Mark Wahlberg), as Ted goes to court to prove he’s a person. $33 million is a good number for an R-rated comedy, but it is substantially less than the first “Ted”’s opening weekend, either due to lack of interest, very strong competition, or both. The latter movie debuted with $54 million a few years ago.
The weekend’s other new wide release, “Max”, followed in fourth with $12.2 million. The family adventure follows a teenager who adopts his brother’s dog—a member of the Marines—after his brother is killed in Afghanistan.
