Faith communities can be found in many places: churches, synagogues, temples, shrines, mosques, homes and even unlikely places like movie theaters. A new movie, War Room: Prayer is a Powerful Weapon, opening in theaters, this week will be a great illustration of the places of faith community.
For a period of time, it seemed religious movies were out of vogue, but in recent times faith films have taken back the theaters by storm. Alex and Stephen Kendrick of Albany, Georgia are certainly part of this movement, having produced Flywheel (2003), Facing the Giants (2006), Fireproof (2008), Courageous (2011), and now War Room; but a multitude of faith films continues to be produced by others also. With each movie, the theaters are packed with both adherents to the faith espoused and others who are interested in the buzz or just moviegoers.
War Room depicts the happiness, followed by the trials and solutions for the Jordan family. Tony (T.C. Stallings) and Elizabeth (Priscilla Shirer) seem to have the perfect family, great jobs, a beautiful home and a perfect life. But trials come, as they do in real life, and the Jordan home begins to come apart, impacting the once happy couple and their beautiful daughter (Alena Pitts).
The film will depict the power of a faith community. When Elizabeth meets her newest client, Miss Clara (Karen Abercrombie), the family learns to pray. Others in the faith community pray as well, bringing God’s solution to the family problem, which helps Tony, Elizabeth and their daughter return to a life of peace and happiness, as well as others in the community who also learn about Ephesians 6:10-20 prayer.
The discipline of prayer has and continues to help millions around our globe. Since the first prayers were uttered by Adam, Eve, and their grandson Enosh, people of all times and ages have called out to the Lord in prayer. Testimonies exist of both small and amazing answers to prayer. Several universities, including Duke University and Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital, have undertaken and written about scientific studies on the amazing results of prayer.
Not only does prayer bring answers, but people’s lives are changed through the act of prayer. When communities gather for prayer, lives and relationships are strengthened. People who were once enemies become friends, and individuals draw closer to God.
Previous films by the Kendrick brothers have made an impact in lives across the United States. Marriages have been saved through studies linked to Fireproof, and other films have shown strength which comes through a strong relationship with God. A Bible study is available for War Room which can be led at churches or in homes. War Room: Prayer is a Powerful Weapon promises to continue this tradition. The movie will show at Regal Cinemas Starlight 14, AMC Northlake, Regal Birkdale Stadium 16 & RPX in Charlotte, Carmike 14 in Hickory and other area theaters. More information can be seen at the movie’s website.
