The flesh always wants to be comfortable! Egoic thoughts constantly tell you to do the things that give you comfort regardless of what your mind tells you. The brain and the mind are two different systems. The brain is the receiver of thought the mind is the creator of thought. Who’s the boss? Who controls your decision making? Do you lean towards memory (brain) or are you fearless enough to take on creativity (mind)?
You may start your day with the best of intentions. You put your work out clothes in your bag, setting the intention to go the gym or to take a walk. Then the day happens and expected or unexpected things show up. You are given an unexpected project that needs to be accomplished by the end of the day. Your husband, wife, or child now needs you to do something that was not planned or expected, and you now have to alter your schedule. Then your brain kicks in, telling you “well there goes my plan. Now I have to sacrifice something in order to get all of these things done!” But What?
You brain goes into hyperdrive, and first it tells you, “well, you can forget about going to the gym or taking that walk, you just don’t have time, after all these things are far more important!” It tells you, you don’t want to lose your job, or your bosses impression of you! It suggests, that this could be your big break, the one project that will set you above the rest!
Or it tells you, you can’t sacrifice your family after all they need you. Your brain will search for files that will support all the “what ifs” that could happen if you don’t follow its direction.
A Course in Miracles says “the ego speaks first, and it speaks loudest.” That means that because the ego controls your thinking it also dominates your responses. The “yeah buts” collaborate with the what ifs and the intentions you created for the day now go out of the window.
Now consider this, what would going for a walk do for you? What if, going for that 10, 20, or 30 minute walk could possibly clear your head and put your priorities in perspective. How about getting away from all of the “overwhelm” you are feeling right now and allow yourself to just relax from all of the demands you are facing?
Hippocrates said, “Walking is a man’s best medicine.” Not only for the body but for the mind as well. Studies have shown that stepping away from stressful situations and out of the surroundings that are creating them allows you to disconnect the brains desire to fix, and allows the mind to step in and create.
Whose your boss, your flesh or your feelings? Everyday you need to say no to the demands of the flesh and pay closer attention to your feelings. You have to deflate the ego and inflate the mind.
The mind of GOD will tell you what to do because it is unlimited and was created to support you. The brain will tell you what you can’t do because it is limited and self serving.
Resist the temptation to deny yourself, put on those sneakers and walk your way into the clarity that will give you a healthier spirit, mind and body!
