Here in San Francisco the Voices of Music 2015–2016 Concert Series will not get under way until December. However, in a little less than a month there will be a special “overture” event entitled Bach’s Harpsichord. This will be a celebration of Johann Sebastian Bach featuring his solo works for harpsichord. The concert will also be held to recognize the work of harpsichord builder John Phillips, proprietor of John Phillips Harpsichords, a small shop in Berkeley that produces four to six high quality instruments per year. These include harpsichords based on French, Italian, Flemish, and German construction techniques. Phillips built his first harpsichord from a kit in 1969, and he opened his shop in 1975. Since that time, the shop has produced nearly 100 instruments. His customers include the University of California campuses at Berkeley, Los Angeles, Davis, and Riverside, as well as the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the San Francisco Symphony, Stanford University, and, at a greater distance, the Early Music Institute at Indiana University and the Stiftung Kloster Michaelstein in Blankenburg, Germany.
Phillips will be honored with a concert consisting entirely of Bach’s music played on his instruments. The performers will be JungHae Kim, Davitt Moroney, Michael Peterson, Yuko Tanaka and Voices of Music co-director Hanneke van Proosdij. A sumptuous wine and cheese reception will follow the performance.
This concert will be free to all subscribers to the 2015–2016 season. It will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 13, in St. Mark’s Lutheran Church at 1111 O’Farrell Street, just off the southwest corner of Franklin Street. The extra tickets will be included when the subscription tickets are sent in the mail. For others general admission will be $40. There will be a $5 discount for both seniors and members of SFEMS, ARC, and EMA. Full-time students can purchase tickets for $5. Single tickets may be purchased through an Arts People event page. Further information may be obtained by calling Voices of Music at 415-260-4687.
For those who need reminding, the San Francisco performances for the 2015–2016 season will take place on Saturday evenings at 8 p.m.: December 19 (Virtuoso Italian Concertos), January 30 (La bella più bella), and March 19 (The Art of the Countertenor). The venue will again be St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Full subscriptions are $100, and the $5 discount for single tickets translates into a $15 discount for the subscription.
