The most anticipated award show of the year has come and gone. With all the surrounding drama, announced performances and promised insanity, it was a show not to be missed.
Like many expected, they did not hold back. This year, Miley Cyrus hosted the big event and did not disappoint. Although it wasn’t the scandalous opening we were looking forward to, Cyrus opened the show with a funny monologue mostly about her crazy Instagram pics and attempt to outshine Ellen’s famous Oscars selfie. Cyrus was still her usual, weird self with many crazy outfit changes and wild persona throughout the show.
Moving along to the most crucial part of the show- the performances. The best performances of the night included Nicki Minaj, The Weeknd, Demi Lovato, Justin Bieber, Twenty One Pilots with A$AP Rocky and of course, Miley Cyrus.
Nicki kicked off the show with an amazing performance of “Trini Dem Girls”. She also cleared the air and confirmed there is no bad blood between her and Taylor Swift after Swift joined Nicki for an encore with “The Night is Still Young” and even closed with a snippet of “Bad Blood”.
The Weeknd did not need any backup dancers or special stage setup for his amazing, hot performance of “I Can’t Feel My Face”. Demi Lovato gave you the summer feels while performing “Cool for the Summer” with umbrellas, beach balls and bathing suits. She also had a surprise cameo by Iggy Azalea whose mic might have been off- not a single word was heard by Azalea.
Justin Bieber strayed from the typical craziness going on at the VMAs and had a calmer, entertaining performance. The Biebs opened with his hit “Where Are U Now” and transitioned to his latest track “What Do You Mean”. After receiving massive applause and cheers, Bieber became emotional and likely grateful for his fans and their love for his reformed self.
Tori Kelly and her incredible vocals also took the stage and blew the audience away with “Should’ve Been Us”. Pharrell, Nick Jonas, and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis also took the stage at this year’s VMAs.
Miley Cyrus closed the award show with her over-the-top yet completely expected performance. Singing her new track, “Dooo It!!!”, Cyrus had many famous drag queens and The Flaming Lips join her on stage. For the big finale, she launched confetti cannons from none other than the area down below and announced her brand new album was available online for free.
Aside from the performances, the other crucial part of an awards show is, of course, the award winners. Taylor Swift took home the most awards of the night- she garnered three moonmans. Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars, Big Sean with Kanye West and John Legend, Fetty Wap, 5 Seconds of Summer and Fallout Boy also took home VMAs.
The most important award of the night is always the Video Vanguard Award. Kanye West was awarded the honorable award and accepted with a very awkward, cringe-worthy speech. After waiting for what felt like forever for West to take in the applause and moment, he finally began his lengthy speech. He rambled on about his past antics, made his apologies and criticized MTV for their exploitation to receive good ratings. He then randomly stated children are the future and wrapped his speech up by announcing that he will run for president in 2020.
The VMAs was once again an epic, entertaining show full of surprises. Until next year, everyone.
