E!’s soap opera The Royals, co-starring Strike Back‘s Vincent Regan as the fictional King of England, is now available on DVD courtesy of Lionsgate Home Entertainment. The Royals: The Complete First Season contains all ten episodes from the show’s first season, as well as three behind-the-scenes featurettes about the production.
In The Royals, Regan portrays the character of King Simon, whose brother Prince Cyrus (Jake Maskall) is trying to kill him and whose wife Queen Helena (Elizabeth Hurley) is cheating on him while he considers whether or not to dissolve the monarchy. It’s a completely over-the-top soap opera from Mark Schwahn, who previously created the long-running CW teen drama One Tree Hill, reportedly from a novel by Michelle Ray.
If you ever saw One Tree Hill, you kind of know what to expect here – just that it’s even bigger, more dramatic and set in another country. Hurley is as scheming and sassy as one would expect from her casting. Regan, who previously portrayed recalcitrant bad guy Karl Matlock in the second Cinemax season of Strike Back, brings that same odd calm to the role of Simon, sometimes seeming like the one same person in the entire royal family. Strike Back fans may enjoy seeing him play a good guy, albeit in a soap world.
The three bonus features are par for the course as far as DVD extras are concerned. “Madness in Great Ones” discusses the creation of the series, while “Behind the Royal Wardrobe” gives insight into the show’s bold fashion statements, and “Private vs. Public” talks about what it considers a modern-day monarchy. You won’t learn a lot about actual royals from this set, but fans of The Royals likely aren’t picking this up to compare reality to fiction. They’re buying the set to learn more about the faux high society, and you will.
The set is technically bare-bones, with only an English audio track and English closed captions. There is no Blu-Ray version, but it does include a code for a digital copy.
Those who are coming to The Royals specifically for Regan will want to rent this before you buy it. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea (no pun intended), and despite being a co-star, he’s often more supporting than not (there are reasons Hurley and the younger cast members are featured on the box). If you’re looking for a fun diversion before the fall TV season starts up, though, look no further.
The Royals: The Complete First Season is now available on Amazon and other major retailers.
