Clevelanders looking for an unique family-fun event for the weekend should look no further than the 54th annual Valley City Frog Jump Festival on Sunday, August 16 where more than 700 frogs are expected to jump and vie for the title “Grand Champion.” Valley City is located 30 miles southwest of Cleveland and it is approximately a 40 minute drive.
Known as the “Frog Jump Capital of Ohio,” Valley City will be holding the Festival at Mill Stream Park situated on the Rocky River. The Festival tests the frogs’ leg strength and celebrates their leaping abilities. More than 3000 people are expected to attend this event. If you have a frog that you would like to enter in the competition, you must register. Registration can be done in advance and there will be a registration starting at 10 a.m. at the Festival. You do not need to own a frog to enjoy the jumping extravaganza.
The jumping competition starts at 11 a.m. and is expected to finish around 5:30 p.m. Each frog is assigned a Flight Time and then is jumped one at a time, getting 3 jumps. Special Note: If you really want hands-on participation and you do not own a frog, frogs can be rented for $8 (Registration is $3 and use of the rented frog is $5).
Another activity at the Frog Jump Festival will be The Great Rocky River Frog Race where you can try to pick which artificial, floatable frog will cross the finish line first, given current and wind conditions. All ages can participate. Also offered at the Festival will be paintball, a bounce house, children’s games, the opportunity to get some amphibian education and the chance to see a UH Med-Evac helicopter up close.
There will be plenty of food and beverages provided by A Taste of Valley City available for purchase. Selections include chicken dinners, corn-on-the-cob, pizza, Italian sausage, hamburgers, fresh fruit and ice cream. Beverages include soft drinks and beer (at the Beer Garden). And make sure you make a stop at the Hoppin’ Retail Shoppe for your frog-related merchandise.
Trophies will be awarded at the end of the Frog Jumping competition. Winners of each Flight will receive a trophy as will all the winners of the Longest and Shortest Jumps of the day. And, of course, the Grand Champion will be named. The record leap to beat is 19 feet, 1 inch recorded by a frog in 1988.
