Both the men’s and women’s defending champions will be returning to try to capture another title, with the biggest story being Serena Williams going for the first calendar Grand Slam in 30 years. Marin Cilic will attempt to capture his second-straight men’s title, but will have to get through a tough bracket to do so. According to a Sports Illustrated report from Aug. 30, Serena Williams will begin her bid for the Grand Slam with this final major tournament of the tennis season. The U.S. Open takes place at Flushing, Queens via the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center with Serena looking to capture her final championship in the Grand Slam for the calendar year. She gets started with a matchup against No. 86 Vitalia Diatchenko of Russia at 7 p.m. EST. Williams is a -5700 favorite on the moneyline to win, with the Russian underdog at +2675.
For the men’s side, Marin Cilic is the 2014 defending champion. He’ll start out his latest campaign to repeat with a matchup against Guido Pella. Cilic is a -1200 favorite to win compared to Pella at +775. No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic will take on Joao Souza with Djokovic a -18500 favorite and Souza priced at +8500. Last year’s runner-up, Kei Nishikori will start off against Benoit Paire, with Nishikori favored at -1175 and Paire at +755. Rafael Nadal will be a -515 favorite and takes on Borna Coric, set at +410.
In terms of the odds to win, Vegas has Novak Djokovic at even odds to capture the men’s title with Roger Federer at 13 to 4 odds and Andy Murray at 15 to 4 odds. Stan Wawrinka is a 12 to 1 favorite, followed by Kei Nishikori at 15 to 1 and Rafael Nadal at 20 to 1. For the women, Serena Williams is at 1 to 2 for the women’s favorite. She’s followed by Victoria Azarenka at 7 to 1, Simon Halep at 8 to 1 and Petra Kvitova at 15 to 1. Of note, Maria Sharapova recently announced she won’t be participating in this year’s tournament.
