Tiger Tail, the makers of the famous black and orange muscle massagers, now offers a companion book, Happy Muscles. The book is based on the premise that most muscle pain is caused by muscle knots (trigger points). The initial chapter of Happy Muscles walks you through the science behind trigger point massage therapy. The book then takes the reader through the full line of Tiger Tail muscle massage devices and provides illustrations to explain their use. Body part pain chapters are next up. Examples of the pain type and probable causes are listed. An illustration of the body part shows various areas of pain and the trigger points associated with that pain. The book also makes suggestions as to which massage device would be best to use for relief of that pain. Happy Muscles ends with the mantra “Pain, Pain, Go Away”.
Happy Muscles was coauthored by Spring Faussett, athlete and inventor of the Tiger Tail massagers and Julie Zuleger PH.D, a Board Certified Myofascial Trigger Point Therapist with 25 years of experience in the field of wellness.
After reading through the introductory chapters that explain the basis behind the science in the book, the author was ready to test trigger point massage. Having been plagued for some time with hamstring pain while driving, the chapter dealing with hamstrings was accessed. The area of pain was located on the illustration; the trigger point for the pain was in the associated buttocks. A Tiger Ball was used to massage the trigger point as noted in the illustration. Instantly it became obvious that the root of the hamstring pain was coming from the trigger point. Massaging the trigger point off and on over a period of days greatly reduced the associated pain. The guide has been used many times for a variety of pains in different muscles caused by an active lifestyle. The author is often surprised at the location of a trigger point associated with a painful muscle as it wasn’t obvious. Locating the trigger point made a big difference in addressing the source of pain.
Happy Muscles is a comprehensive self-help book for anyone who is interested in self massage. It explains both the principles of trigger point massage and provides a road map for finding them.
