It’s no secret that Marvel Entertainment has been on a roll. Ever since Marvel has been involved in developing their own super hero flicks (except for The X-Men, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four and The Hulk), they have been producing a string of successful movies that have been pleasing both comic geeks and the general movie going public. Their formula was simple. Develop individual films based on popular characters such as Captain America, Iron Man and Thor, and then putting them all together in a team movie.
This success has spurred Hollywood to take a page from Marvel’s success and dig into their vaults to look for franchises that they can dust off and give the Marvel treatment. Warner Bros. was a natural to dip into their roster of DC Comics heroes, developing individual super hero movies based on their characters, such as Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, and then putting them all together in one group film, the upcoming Justice League movie.
Not wanting to be left out in the dust, Universal Studios has announced that they will be rebooting their Universal Monsters franchise, developing several independent movies and then mashing them all together in one big monster slugfest.
One their development slate are a reboot of the successful ’90’s Mummy franchise, along with a remake of The Creature from the Black Lagoon, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, Frankenstein, The Invisible Man,Van Helsing, and The Wolf Man.
Tom Cruise is already in talks with Universal to star in the Mummy reboot. Rumor has it he will be playing an ex-Navy Seal and the Mummy will be a woman. Alex Kurtzman (People Like Us) is on-board to direct and Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange; Passengers) is currently penning the script. The studio is also eying Angelina Jolie to play the Bride of Frankenstein.
