Wizards of the Coast revealed that Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger would be the major antagonist in their upcoming expert Magic: The Gathering expansion set Battle for Zendikar. Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger – 10
Legendary Creature – Eldrazi (Mythic Rare)
When you cast Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger, exile two target permanents.
Whenever Ulamog attacks, defending player exiles the top twenty cards of his or her library.
A force as voracious as time itself.
Ten mana is a lot, yet Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger won’t be leaving you hanging dry when an opponent casts a Clash of Wills for one. Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger laughs at counters like Mindswipe and Bone to Ash. Although Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger may be stopped from entering the battlefield he’ll still eat two of your rival’s best cards whenever you cast it. That’s no small effect. In a deck that can ramp up into it, Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger will quickly bring the game to an end with an indestructible 10/10 body. In order to deal with Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger you’ll need to exile with and Abzan Charm or Utter End. You certainly wouldn’t want to use a Disperse or Anchor to the Aether as your adversary would be able to cast Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger again and exile another two of your permanents. Otherwise you’ll be force to chump block. It won’t matter how many creatures you have to throw in Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger’s path though because eventually your library will have zero cards left in it.
One place Ulamog, the Ceaseless One may see competitive play is in Modern Tron decks. Thanks to Urza’s Mine, Urza’s Power Plant, and Urza’s Tower you’ll quickly have the mana needed to cast Ulamog, the Ceaseless One. With Tron decks already receiving other goodies such as Ugin, the Spirit Dragon will Ulamog, the Ceaseless One be the card that pushes this popular archtype over the top? It should be noted that Modern players do have access to cheap and efficient means of exiling creatures with Path to Exile and Dispatch. Regardless of its applications in Modern, we can definitely expect players to use Ulamog, the Ceaseless One as their general in Commander.
