UFC bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey travels into hostile territory this weekend, for a title fight against Brazilian striker Bethe Correia, according to a July 31 report from MMA Fighting. Rousey, 28, will be fighting in Brazil for the first time ever, as she puts her title on the line in the UFC 190 headliner. Rousey has fought in California or Las Vegas in each of her first five UFC appearances.
UFC 190 marks the first time Rousey will be traveling overseas for a fight. The only other time Rousey fought outside the United States was in 2011, when she collided with Charmaine Tweet in Canada. Will the Brazilian crowd play a factor in the fight? There’s no doubt about it.
Fighting in Brazil is like competing nowhere else in the world. The fans are loud, aggressive and distracting. Here’s the thing: Brazilian fight fans are notorious for chanting scary, threatening phrases at non-Brazilian UFC fighters. Rousey, a superstar judo player, may not be used to such chants.
Rousey is used to fighting in front of fans in the United States, a country that cheers and supports her. When she fights in Brazil in the UFC 190 headliner, her opponent is the one who will have the support of the fans.
How will the fight play out? Rousey is an elite submission artist, so Correia will likely try to keep the fight standing. Correia is an undefeated striker, but she’s not at Rousey’s level when it comes to the ground aspect of the fight game.
Correia, who earned a title shot by defeating Julie Kedzie, Shayna Baszler and Jessamyn Duke, will try everything in her power to keep the fight standing. Elsewhere on the UFC 190 main card, Brazilian legends Maurício Rua and Antônio Rogério Nogueira collide in a rematch 10 years in the making.
The men battled once before a decade ago, in a fight held under the Pride FC banner. Additionally, the UFC 190 main card features an intriguing heavyweight title between Antônio Silva and Soa Palelei. UFC 190, which emanates Aug. 1 from HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is available exclusively on pay-per-view.
