Illegal immigration has become one the hot button issues in this campaign season. Today, Donald Trump released his policy paper on the illegal immigration. This arrives after a week of crimes allegedly by illegal immigrants. In California, Victor Aureliano Martinez Ramirez, 29 was charged with the brutal rape and murder Marilyn Pharis who was beaten with a hammer and sexually assaulted then died after being transported to the hospital. It was revealed that Ramirez had been arrested repeatedly in the U.S and most recently allowed to go to drug rehabilitation instead of jail on drug charges. According to FOX News, “According to County Jail officials, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement declined to issue an immigration detainer that would have required local authorities to hold him for deportation.” This happened after Ramirez had been charged in cases that range from allegedly assaulting another women and for possession of methamphetamine. Why Ramirez was able to continue living in the United States is unclear.
In Trump’s policy paper, he makes it clear that the problem of illegal immigration isn’t going away with the tactics that the United States has been practicing. Trump would solve the problem by having all criminal aliens back to their home countries. The United States would also cancel any visas to foreign counties. The Trump’s plan also calls for tripling the number of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. Trump also calls for the end of the birthright citizenship. He believes that allowing children of illegal aliens is citizenship is outright ridiculous
Another point in the Trump plan is to stop welfare benefits to illegal immigrants. According to Trump’s plan “End welfare abuse. Applicants for entry to the United States should be required to certify that they can pay for their own housing, healthcare and other needs before coming to the U.S.” Alfonso Aguilar, a Republican who leads the American Principles Project’s Latino Partnership once said of Trump’s ideas to keep illegal immigrants out of the U.S as ludicrous, baseless and insulting,” Aguilar then added that “Sadly, it hurts the party with Hispanic voters. It’s a story of idiocy I haven’t experienced in a long time.” The problem with Aguilar statements are that many Americans polled believe illegal immigration is a immense problem that requires to be addressed now. According to a Rasmussen Reports phone calls found that 62% believe the U.S is not aggressive enough when it comes to deporting illegal immigrants. The Trump presidential bid has certainly tapped into that frustration.
According to the Pew Research Center, 11.2 million illegal immigrants already reside here in the U.S. of those 73,665 are imprisoned in the U.S for crimes committed here. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley stated in 2013, 1000 of the 36,000 illegal immigrant criminals who were released, then went on to commit other crimes, which include child abuse, child cruelty, and domestic violence. On Friday, Brian Omar Hyde, 19, was arrested and charged with the murders of 3 people, including that of his own 17 year old cousin who was pregnant. Hyde was reportedly living in this country illegally after crossing the border in Mexico, although he is from Belize. Hyde faces charges of three counts of second degree murder and one count of killing an unborn child by injury to the mother.
