Pat Robertson, of television’s popular “700 Club,” called out GOP presidential candidate and billionaire entrepreneur Donald Trump on Thursday morning during his television program. Robertson made reference to Trump’s performance during Tuesday night’s debate with seven other GOP presidential hopefuls that took place in Milwaukee and was hosted by Fox Business. According to a Huffington Post report on Wednesday, Donald Trump made mention of the fact that he had met Russian President Vladimir Putin in the past. He made this revelation when the topic briefly turned to foreign policy at the debate which was designed to discuss economic issues.
Trump said that he and Putin were stablemates on CBS-TV’s “60 Minutes” program. He said that the encounter with Putin went quite well in CBS’ green room – where people wait for their time to be on the air – while asserting that his personal interview with CBS and Putin’s interview had aired on the same night. Following Trump’s comment, candidate Carly Fiorina mocked Trump by implying that such an instance does not suggest that Trump is any way serious about foreign policy – as it was not a political meeting of Trump and Putin. Fiorina slammed Trump by saying:
I have met <Putin> as well. Not in a green room for a show, but in a private meeting. One of the reasons I’ve said I wouldn’t be talking to Vladimir Putin right now is because we are speaking to him from a position of weakness, brought on by this administration. So I wouldn’t talk to him for a while.”
Of course, besides mocking Trump’s boasting of having met Putin, Fiorina took the opportunity to do a double-shot by blasting President Obama’s foreign policy in the same statement. The audience enjoyed the former Hewlett-Packard CEO’s comment and laughed in stark approval. A fact-check, incidentally, reveals that Fiorina did run into Putin back in 2001 in a green room when she was waiting to give a speech at an event. But that isn’t to say that she didn’t meet privately with him at another time.
As far as Pat Robertson’s comment is concerned, however, he called Trump a liar. He said that “60 Minutes” pre-records its interviews and tapes the interviews from different locations. He asserts that there is no way Trump and Putin would have ever been thrown in a “green room” at CBS to wait their turns to do the interviews live at the CBS studio. Robertson said that he is very “surprised that no one in the media” has brought this up or called Trump out on this lie. He went on to say that he is friends with Trump, but went on to say, basically, that his lie shouldn’t not go without being commented or reported upon. Trump has yet to respond to the accusation by Robertson that he lied. Time Magazine has now called out Trump on his claim that he was with Putin in the green room during a “60 Minutes” broadcast. Time claims that the two men weren’t even on the same continent when the show aired. For good measure, the report says that ratings weren’t very good for that broadcast either.
