Republican frontrunner Donald Trump is not only going after his Democratic counterpart Hillary Clinton for her email scandal but her top aide and confident Huma Abedin. Trump was speaking to donors in Boston, Massachusetts on Friday, Aug. 28, 2015 when he made remarks about Abedin, and her role in the email scandal and her husband disgraced and fallen New York Congressman Anthony Weiner. Trump called Weiner a “perv” and “sleazebag” because of his continued sex scandals that forced him to resign from Congress and led to a fail bid for the New York mayoral office. The GOP frontrunner also insinuated Abedin shared classified State Department information with Weiner, just as Congress is investigating Abedin role in Clinton scandal at the State Department.
Abedin, 40 a close Clinton confidante served as Clinton’s deputy chief of staff when she was Secretary of State and is now serving as Clinton’s vice chairman for her campaign. Abedin has been loyal devotee to Clinton since the 1990s, when Bill Clinton was president, and Abedin a student at George Washington University. Abedin has been feeling the heat because while she was deputy chief of staff she was working three other jobs including as a private contractor, while working with classified information at the State Department.
Those dual roles have put Abedin in the middle of Clinton’s email scandal. Recent email releases and documents revealed Abedin special designation as a Special Government Employee (SGE). Abedin also pursued work for Clinton’s husband former President Bill Clinton’s Clinton Foundation, and Hillary’s transition to private life.
Trump tried to show that Abedin was national security risk because she is the daughter of Islamic supremacists and she is married to Weiner. Trump also emphasized the Abedin is part of Clinton’s inner circle, “Huma now is one of the people.” Trump pointed out at his rally, “Huma is one of the people it all came through. Who is Huma married to? One of the great sleezebags of our time: Anthony Weiner.”
Continuing Trump said, “So now – think of it – Huma is getting classified secrets. She is married to Anthony Weiner, who is a perv. Now these are confidential documents and guess what happens to Anthony Weiner. A month ago he went to work for a public relations firm. So she’s married to Anthony Weiner. Do you think there is even a 5 percent chance she is not telling Anthony Weiner – now of a public relations firm – what the hell is coming across?”
The GOP frontrunner reminded the public the danger Weiner poses, and made reference to his social media sex scandal. Abedin “is married to a bad guy. I’ve known Anthony Weiner for a long time. I knew him before he got caught with the bing bing bing. He was a bad guy then. It turns out, he was a really bad guy.” In 2011, Weiner was exposed for having online relationships and sending photos of “his private parts over the internet.”
Clinton, was quick to have her campaign defend her trusted long-time aide. Hillary’s press secretary Nick Merrill tweeted a response and also issued a statement. Merrill tweeted “@realDonaldTrump crossed the line this evening. Disgraceful. 9:26 PM – 28 Aug 2015”
Merrill also included a statement with his tweet, which read, “Donald Trump has spent the summer saying offensive things about women, but there is no place for patently false, personal attacks towards a staff member.” Continuing he said, Trump “should be ashamed of himself, and others in his own party should take a moment to stand up to him and draw the line for once. It’s embarrassing to watch frankly,”
Abedin is not only feeling the heat from Trump, but from Congress and the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa). Grassley sent Abedin a letter on Thursday, Aug. 27 questioning Abedin’s status, and requesting more documents relating to her permission to work for the State Department and private contractors. Grassley has been putting the heat on Abedin about her special status, and the fact she was overpaid during her maternity leave while working at the State Department. Grassley has been investigating Abedin since 2013.
Grassley wrote to Abedin, “These emails illustrate why there are legitimate concerns about the department’s use of the [Special Government Employee] designation and the blurring of the lines between the official business of the State Department, the private interests of [advisory firm] Teneo, and the fundraising interests for various entities under the personal control of Secretary and former President Clinton. How can the taxpayer know who exactly you were working for at any given moment? How can the ethics officer at the State Department know?”
At the center of the controversy, surrounding Abedin is an email to Clinton political allies in December 2012 about a dinner in Dublin, Ireland, where Abdein wrote, “Maybe we can all gather for drinks/dinner and HRC can come join for as long as she can?” Abdein sent the email from her State Department account. The dinner is Dublin was part of Clinton’s official trip to Ireland, and was attended by the CEO of Teneo, “a private consulting firm,” where Abedin was also working at and Clinton campaign donors.
Trump’s comments about Abedin where meant to put more of spotlight on Clinton’s aide’s role in the scandal during Clinton’s State Department tenure. Everything Trump says these days gets media attention, and the story about Clinton’s aide is been mostly at the way side, but it only deepens Clinton’s scandals at the State Department. Abedin’s dual roles show that Clinton’s problems maybe deeper than just her email server, that Clinton in fact ignored protocol expected of a state official entrusted with highly classified information essential to national security.
