The “True Detective” season 2 spoilers and speculation theories have already started up just one episode into the series premiere. The latest installment of the show met with mixed reviews from critics and fans who were avid viewers following the hit first season. That season featured Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as well as several other standout actors and an amazing script. The latest season started out with Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, Taylor Kitsch and Rachel McAdams, each of whom have seemingly troubled pasts which have carried into their present situations.
Matt Johnston of Business Insider reported on June 23 that the initial reaction to the first episode of the new season was “not so good.” It’s noted that a lot of fans of the show felt the story was difficult to follow and slow, in just the first episode. Johnston takes a different stance than many critics who have already bashed the first installment, as he believes the first episode gave insight into more of what is going on with the main characters. He notes the plot officially begins about the 60 minute mark on the first show, when all three “detectives” finally come face to face with a murder to solve.
Those detectives include Ray Velcoro, played by Colin Farrell, who is a drunk cop working on both sides of the law while also trying to get custody of his “alleged son.” There’s also Ani Bezzerides, played by Rachel McAdams, who is into kinky things in the bedroom, has issues with her dad and sister, and most likely has gambling and a drinking problem. The third “detective” is from the California Highway Patrol. Paul Woodrush is played by Taylor Kitsch and has scars on his body, as well as suicidal tendencies. He also has some intimacy issues as seen in the first episode.
The other main character is Frank Semyon, a crime boss played by Vince Vaughn. Semyon is attempting to get involved with a huge deal related to the California transportation system that would make him and any partners, very rich. However, the murder at the center of this season seems to be blocking that deal from taking place. Semyon also has connection to Velcoro, who he has doing various side jobs for him when needed.
With four main characters compared to really just the two detectives on last season, it has definitely opened up speculation about who might get killed off. Surprisingly, Bovada sportsbook has odds on the four main characters. Woodrugh is the slight favorite to perish first, with odds of +200, while Semyon is second with odds of +225. Velcoro and Bezzerides are both +250 odds as of right now, but it’s very likely this could change as the season starts moving.
Many fans are hoping it will start moving, or they may quickly be tuning out. True Detective airs each Sunday on HBO at 9 p.m. EST, with on demand viewing available for subscribers with HBO Go app or web portal use available.
