As new iterations of Treyarch’s Zombie mode come alongside new iterations, so too come the innovations. This year with Call of Duty Black Ops 3 the team is working on ways to keep the same addicting survival gameplay, but add in some twists to encourage new play styles. Jason Blundell, Director of Campaign and Zombies on Black Ops 3 spoke exclusively with Examiner about a bit of the pre-game strategy for the new zombie mode, Shadows of Evil and what loadouts look like in the mode this time around.
“Aside from the progression system, I think the Bubble Gum system will surprise them[players] most,” said Blundell, “We have these Gobble Gum, which is actually a pre-defined pack that you setup before you go into a game session and then there is a Bubble Gum Machine that can hand out those abilities.”
Blundell explained that the machine functions like a perk machine from previous entries, but with a bit of expansion in function and customization, which Blundell says will grant players the ability to customize their gumballs in a way that lends itself to their strategy or play style. Blundell went on to explain what else players of past games might find interesting or new.
“I think the other difference is if you were playing Shadows of Evil, you’ll notice a more spatially aware map,” Blundell said, “. In other words, it’s a map that exists on multiple plans. Some of our maps would make you constrained, but in this game there are multiple levels of depth. It’s also one of the biggest maps we’ve ever done.”
Blundell stated that the map design will be translated into great experiences in a map that’s not just bigger to be bigger,
Scale alone is not good enough, so what we’ve done is made everything traversable, so you can find your bearings around the large map.
Blundell also explained how loadouts and pickups will vary in Black Ops 3’s Shadows of Evil from the choices on the walls, to the magic box random generator, players still have a bit of control.
“For the weapons, you can change the actual weapon that is on the wall,” explained Blundell, “Based on your unlock or progression system, you can change the attachments and power of those weapons. You can also change the weapons that come out of the Magic Box, which is another feature as well.”
Blundell explained that these changes can happen based on time played, and unlocks for the Bubble Gum, stating “the more you unlock, the more you can set your pack up.”
Blundell went on to describe the process by which players will grab their gumballs in game, saying players will essentially earn their money, walk up to the machine, and purchase a gumball. Which gumball comers out is still a bit random, as Blundell says you truly “don’t know which one will come out”.
“People will work as a team to work out how to get the greatest distribution or abilities based on their strategies to get the high rounds,” Blundell said of the tactics players will need to progress as a team, “It’s all another layer of strategy for teams.”
Call of Duty Black Ops 3 and the Shadows of Evil zombie mode walk the earth once more on November 6, 2015 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.
