Trevor Noah had emergency surgery on his appendix and his short stay in the hospital gave him enough material for a ton of jokes about America’s healthcare system. Noah, who is the new host of “The Daily Show” on the Comedy Central Network, was shocked by the treatment he received at a hospital.
According to MSN News on November 7, Noah got to the hospital in excruciating pain and almost passing out when he was told he had to fill out forms before he could be seen. He also couldn’t believe it when he started to faint in the waiting room and the nurse told him he couldn’t faint in that location because he had to go into triage.
Noah said on his show this week how he went to the emergency room due to his perforated appendix, adding: “I don’t know if ’emergency room’ is the right term because they make you wait.” It seems the native of South Africa has gotten a rude awakening about how the greatest country in the world handles their injured and sick in an emergency.
His story is so commonplace that it is not shocking to anyone who has graced the inside of a hospital emergency room. If Noah had the opportunity to stay overnight he would have seen another ludicrous habit of waking a sleeping patient every few hours to give them a sleeping pill, so they can sleep! That never made any sense.
“I feel like there should be two rooms – a room for people with emergencies and a room for people who can fill out forms,” he said. Despite being in excruciating pain and barely conscious, he was flabbergasted that he was expected to do all this paperwork of filling out forms before he could be seen, reports the Daily Mail.
Noah said, “I’m like, ‘What more information do you need, other than the fact that I’m dying?’ ” He also said that when he felt like he was about to keel over in the waiting room but the nurse forbid him to do that! When he started to faint, “[The nurse was] like, ‘Sir, you can’t faint here, sir. You need to go to triage.’ [I’m like,] ‘Are you telling me where I can and cannot faint?’ “
“It’s a crazy experience,” he continued, and once he was placed in the examining room, there were still more forms the nurse wanted him to fill out. This time it was for payment of the service, that he clearly didn’t get as of yet! “She was like, ‘I don’t know – how are you paying for this? ” Noah said, “I was like, ‘Well, with my life, clearly. Because you’re not helping me.”
When the nurse suddenly realized who he was Noah said: “She goes, ‘You know, I’ve seen the billboards – you’re fine. You can pay for this,’ ” said Noah. Once done with the antics and eventually surgery at the hospital he went back to work on “The Daily Show” and fans thought he was treated horribly when he thanked Comedy Central for giving him a day off after surgery. This was a joke because the network pleaded with him to take some time off to recuperate and he refused.
