UPDATE Aug. 12: The remaining four groups have been added to the list below. They are Spirit of the West Riders, U.S. Army Field Artillery Half Section – Fort Sill, U.S. Marine Corps Mounted Color Guard and Valley Hunt Club.
The 19 equestrian groups that will ride along Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena on Jan. 1, 2016, were announced Tuesday by Tournament of Roses Pres. Mike Matthiessen. The 127th Rose Parade, themed “Find Your Adventure,” features some familiar favorites and some new or returning entries, such as the American Endurance Ride Conference and Dakota Thunder Shires.
Equestrians are chosen to showcase different breeds, costumes, and tack as well as for their ability to entertain the crowds along the parade route. All riders must have previous parade experience. The units are invited to participate in Equestfest presented by Wells Fargo on Dec. 29, 2015 at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. Equestfest is an opportunity for groups to show off their riding, roping and shooting skills. The stables are open for visitors.
The Budweiser Clydesdales, a fan favorite, will be returning for the third time since 2014 Pres. Scott Jenkins brought them back for the 125th Rose Parade. Besides the Clydesdales, returning groups include The New Buffalo Soldiers, a post-Civil War reenactment group led by farrier Charles Brown; the 1st Calvary Horse Detachment that includes a wagon pulled by mules; charro teams Los Hermanos Bañuelos, headquartered up the hill in Altadena, and The Martinez; Medieval Times, with their spectacular costumes and mock fighting along the parade route; and Scripps Miramar Ranch, known for extravagant costumes and carriages that are new each year.
The Norco Cowgirls were joined in 2015 by one of the girls from The Little Miss Norco Cowgirls Rodeo Drill Team. For the 2016 parade, the entire unit will join the adult riders. The United States Marine Corps West Coast Composite Band was confirmed in the band lineup in February, and it is accompanied by a mounted color guard.
