On Nov. 20, 2015, Total Health Foods held the grand opening of their new location at 2948 Biddle Ave. in Wyandotte. Several Wyandotte city officials were there to help celebrate. Mayor Joe Peterson performed the ribbon cutting ceremony in front of an enthusiastic crowd. Following the ceremony, everyone headed inside to enjoy a festive champagne reception with passed hors d’oevres, food samples, and music.
Total Health Foods was originally located in Southgate, and moved to Wyandotte in 2010. Since then, the store has become an important and well-loved part of the Wyandotte business community. Owners Janette and Annette Crossman and Kathleen Gunther treat their customers like family, and Total Health Foods has helped many Downriver residents improve their health and their knowledge about nutrition.
The new location of the business dates back to the 19th century. According to Kathleen, Annette, and Janette, the building was constructed in 1861. Annette said, “We’re only the third family to own this building.” Seventy years ago, in 1946, it housed Asmus Bros. Hardware. After 1967 it was the home of Gail’s Office Supply, which was headquartered in the building until the business closed in 2003. Renovations began on the building in the spring of 2015.
According to Gunther and the Crossmans, the biggest selling items at the previous location, which is just two doors away from the new store, were organic essential oils. Those are still featured prominently in the new site, but the store now places a much greater emphasis on groceries. The new location has added a good-sized organic produce department, and a deli counter featuring healthy salads, deli meats, and gourmet cheeses. The business also offers a large number of foods for those on special diets or who have food allergies or sensitivities such as celiac disease. They also carry supplements, teas, bulk foods, and gift items.
Attached to the new location is Alice Huang’s Chinese Natural Therapies, an alternative health services center. The center provides massage and traditional Chinese modalities, including acupuncture, acupressure, cupping, and gusha. To make an appointment or for more information visit Alice Huang’s Web site or call 313-418-8161.
