With the end of summer lingering in the distance, New Yorkers are fleeing to the shore as much as possible before school starts and the temperatures start to drop. While many choose to hit the Hamptons or the Jersey shore, some venture further south to the OC…..that is, Ocean City, Maryland. As with any beach adventure, a day of sunbathing and chasing waves would be incomplete without taking in the local dining treats. Ocean City does not disappoint.
Here are the top 5 essential items for foodies:
Yes, some might consider Ocean City too far to travel for a beach vacation, but where else are you going to have a chance to devour deliciously seasoned lump crab meat?! Maryland offers the real deal, and with several well-established crab joints, including Higgins Crabhouse, On the Bay, and Crab Alley, a visit to Ocean City would be incomplete without sampling a crab cake or, better yet, putting your surgical skills to the test in dissecting a few crabs.
2. Thrasher’s French Fries
Since 1929, visitors to the Ocean City boardwalk have feasted on Thrasher’s boardwalk french fries. These spuds are fried twice and doused in vinegar then served in small to large buckets. The fries are delicious and the long line only reinforces how popular they are among the locals and tourists. The #1 rule: no ketchup! If anything, feel free to add more vinegar.
3. Caramel Corn
A trip to Ocean City would be incomplete without sampling some caramel corn. Since the early 1900s, beachgoers have been able to enjoy this delightful treat from local favorites, Dolle’s and Fisher’s. Grab some for your stroll on the boardwalk or the car ride home.
4. Candy Kitchen
As with other beach hotspots, Ocean City welcomes you to enjoy saltwater taffy, particularly from Candy Kitchen. Considered a candy institution in Ocean City, Candy Kitchen goes beyond the taffy by offering a wide array of candies and chocolates, not to mention several ice cream flavors. There certainly are a number of locations along the Coastal Highway, so if you miss the first one, have no fear—another location is just a few blocks away.
5. Dumser’s Dairyland
Since 1939, Dumser’s has been serving up delicious ice cream treats featuring homemade flavors. It’s considered a tradition to head to Dumser’s after a family dinner for one of the decadent sundaes or an old fashioned milkshake.
For some beachgoers, noshing in Ocean City is a nostalgic experience given the history behind some of these culinary institutions. Visitors to Ocean City will find these treats to be quite pleasing. The good news is that if you experience a void in the Fall, you can order some of these online.
