Fans were shocked during the season finale of “Edge of Alaska” to learn that Mischel had suffered a heart attack. At first it looked as though he wasn’t going to survive, but he is tougher than he looks. He managed to pull through, even though once at the hospital he refused surgery. He eventually got up and just walked out. On October 5 a Facebook post from the show states that Tim is alive and well. He is still recovering and the post goes on to say that, “Nothing is going to keep this true McCarthy man down for long.” That is certainly good news, and several people are leaving comments wishing him well.
Mischel moved to McCarthy, Alaska almost 40 years ago and according to Pop Tower, is seen as the “Old Man of the Mountain.” Many people in the community go to him for advice, and he has recently played a pivotal role in the ongoing battle of wills between Neil Darish and Jeremy Keller. As the two men fought over the changes Darish is bringing to the small town, Mischel in his wisdom simply tells them that change is inevitable and actually a good thing. Keller was very surprised when the older man sided with Darish, he was certain someone who had spent so many years living in the area would not want change to come to McCarthy.
Until just recently he has lived alone up on the top of a remote mountain. He spent many years dealing with the harsh weather conditions, bears and other challenges by himself. As he’s gotten older and his health has deteriorated, many of the McCarthy locals have been happy to help him. They often bring him supplies and sometimes a bit of fresh meat from a recent hunt. Many thought when they heard he had been medevaced out, that they would never see their old friend again, so it’s great news to hear he’s doing so well.
