Tim Gunn is a fashion guru who is also the chairman of Parson’s Fashion School in New York City, is brutally honest, funny and charismatic that left a long-lasting impression on AOL BUILD’s audience. Gunn, who is known for his impeccable style and sharp-tongue but honest commentary had the opportunity to talk about “ Project Runway Junior” and what he considers ‘stupid’ fashion.
AOL BUILD audience members had the opportunity to ask the celebrity fashion guru on what makes a good fashion designer. In true Tim Gunn fashion, he decided to talk about what the fashion world doesn’t need.“ The world doesn’t need another t-shirt or silly couture line”, Gunn says. He explained that fashion needs an innovator that will have lasting power. When asked what designers have this type of staying power and creativity he mentioned the Diane von Furstenberg, a legendary designer know for her iconic wrap dress.
The moderator for AOL BUILD, admitted that he was nervous about talking to Gunn and changed his outfit several times. Gunn jokingly explained that he does not get upset or bash people for what they decided to wear, he just wants them to own up to what they wear.
Gunn also explained why Project Runway 7 left him “underwhelmed” and he explains that he just wasn’t happy. He noted that at times designers were unprepared and at times showed up with no supplies to work with. He also talked about how the editors on the show are nice with the editing of the series. He stated that he sometimes get infuriated by basic design projects so he can’t help but to get upset because he knows the designers can do better. He even admits that sometimes he gets passionate and upset with his inspiring designers, he just want to be as good as he know they can be.

What the AOL BUILD audience didn’t see was the Huffington Post interview with Tim Gunn which was had more of Gunn’s wittiness as he expounded on what he considers a dumb designer – sorry Mr. Kanye West. “ It’s just dumb”, Gunn says when asked about Kanye West’s fashion line. He also noted that the Obama girls where the anecdote to the Kardashians.
He also said, ” Kendall Jenner is tainted by the Kardashians aura of yuck”, was he response when asked about the Kardashians influence in fashion and pop culture.
“If you want guidance in fashion, just consider this: if a Kardashian is wearing it — don’t!” he explains regarding on what trends people should wear. However Gunn is a huge fan of the real first family, the Obamas.
“ The Obama girls dress their age, they aren’t trying to look older or younger and they are getting the best fashion advice in the world from an icon, their mother (First Lady Michelle Obama)”.
