The second round of the 2015 PGA Championship golf major is over at Whistling Straits along the shores of Lake Michigan in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and a number of big name players have failed to make the cut. Here’s a list of the five biggest names in golf who failed to make the cut this week at the 2015 PGA Championship. All five of these players were among the top 20 players in the tournament with the lowest odds to win the 2015 PGA Championship and all five failed to make the cut.
At this point one has to ask if Tiger Woods will ever win another major. It will be nine years next year since Tiger last won a major, and he will be 40 years old in 2016. Not included in the list below are a number of former PGA Championship players who failed to make the cut. That list includes Padriag Harrington, David Toms, John Daly, and Rich Beem. That was pretty funny when John Daly launched his club into Lake Michigan after putting three balls in the lake on three swings.
1. Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods entered the 2015 PGA Championship with odds of 30 to 1 to win the major. Tiger has previously won the the PGA Championship four times in 1999, 2000, 2006, and 2007, and he has won 14 total majors but he completely flopped in the 2015 PGA Championship finishing at +4 over. Tiger Woods also missed the cuts at the 2015 U.S. Open and the 2015 British Open so he’s having a pretty bad year. He did finish in a tie for 17th place at The Masters this year but it’s clear Tiger Woods is no longer at the top of his game.
2. Zach Johnson
After winning the 2015 British Open in a dramatic playoff, Zach Johnson showed up at the PGA Championship and failed to make the cut. Zach shot +3 over the first two rounds and missed the cut by one stroke. Personally, I think you have to cut Zach Johnson a lot of slack for missing the cut. It’s really tough for a player to win a huge tournament like the British Open and then come back a few weeks later and be at the top of his game for the next major. Zach Johnson was 60 to 1 odds to win this week so the odds makers understood that well.
3. Adam Scott
Adam Scott was 20 to 1 odds to win the 2015 PGA Championship so he was one of the betting favorites and he completely failed missing the cut by shooting +7 over the first two rounds. In many ways, Adam Scott’s failure to miss the cut here was much worse than Tiger Woods or Zach Johnson’s failures but he is a less accomplished golfer than the other two. Adam Scott has won just one major in his career which came at The Masters in 2013.
4. Shane Lowry
Shane Lowry was 50 to 1 odds to win the 2015 PGA Championship after he had just won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational last week. As I wrote earlier this week about the betting odds for players to win the PGA Championship this week it was really hard to see Shane Lowry coming back after such an emotional win last week and winning a major this week. Shane Lowry shot +3 over at the PGA Championship to miss the cut by one stroke.
5. Jimmy Walker
Jimmy Walker was 60 to 1 odds to win this week but he shot +4 over to miss the cut. Walker has won twice so far in 2015, but both his wins were much earlier in the season. He came into the 2015 PGA Championship not playing well and his poor play continued this week.
