When you are new at a job, there are a whole different set of rules that you have to comply with as opposed to when you have been working somewhere for long. Even small behaviors can make a huge difference because your boss and your co-workers don’t know you all that well. Some actions that will probably go unnoticed a couple of months down the road, but right now, they can give rise to concerns about your work ethics. Here are some things that you should avoid doing at the workplace:
1. Ask for vacation during your first couple of months: When you take time off soon after taking a job, it is bound to raise some eyebrows. Your manager is not going to get a positive impression and neither are your coworkers. The only exception when this is deemed suitable is if you have already cleared this time off before you took the job or someone is really ill.
2. Complaining about your new boss to your coworkers: Regardless of how long you have been working at a job, it isn’t acceptable to complain about your boss. Nevertheless, it is considered routine amongst coworkers. But, if you do it early on, it is not going to leave a positive impression. Even those who share the same opinion are going to think of you as a prima donna or something.
3. Badmouthing your old boss or job: Once your coworkers have gotten to know you, it is a good idea to share some war stories about your old colleagues, job or boss. However, doing it when you are still new is a definite no-no because your coworkers are going to consider you someone who is willing to badmouth their colleagues and could do the same to them in the future.
4. Going overboard with the business expenses: When you are the new guy, there is no faster way to destroy your reputation than asking to rent a nicer car or stay in a more expensive hotel. You can only get away with these things when you are a faithful and great employee and not a new one.
5. Spending time on social platforms like Facebook: Taking the occasional Facebook break is perfectly acceptable once you have proven yourself to your coworkers and boss as someone who gives in high quality work. But, if you are spotted scouring social websites during work hours, your manager and coworkers are going to wonder about your work ethics.
6. Using bawdy humor: Doing this may never be acceptable in some places, but there are workplaces where such things are perfectly in tune with the atmosphere. Nonetheless, you have to get to know your coworkers better before jumping in this pool or you may end up offending and insulting them, which could lead to problems in the future. You have to understand the culture first.
