In 2001 Ben Stiller took on the fashion world with his hit film Zoolander. This ridiculous comedy was a box office success and garnered not only mostly positive reviews, but a legion of fans that had been begging for more. Now Zoolander 2 is finally hitting theaters in 2016, so what better time to revisit the original with the all-new Zoolander Blue SteelBook Edition on Blu-ray for the first time.
Zoolander follows Derek Zoolander, a dimwitted male model, who feels threatened by the new and popular Hansel. After his friends and fellow models are killed in a freak gasoline fight, he announces his retirement from modeling. However, he is persuaded by Mugatu and his lackey, Katinka Inga Shanana, to lead their Derelicte fashion show. Unbeknownst to Derek, he had been brainwashed into killing the Prime Minister of Malaysia. The film features a great cast including Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, Christine Taylor, Milla Jovovich, Jerry Stiller, David Duchovny, Jon Voight, Judah Friedlander and of course Ben Stiller in not only the title role but also in the director’s chair. If you have somehow missed this film you are missing out. It is a deliberately dumb film poking fun at the fashion world and works on almost every level. You have to step into this knowing of the silliness of it all to really enjoy it, but if you try to make it more than it is you will likely not dig it. Thankfully it holds up well after all these years with the great chemistry between Stiller and Wilson making these tow the perfect dimwitted leads to make this film work more than it ever deserved to. Everyone in the film is way over the top and you watch it realizing it makes no sense half the time and that is exactly the brilliance of it all.
This is a comedy where everyone involved went all in and not only had some fun, they made the audience have fun and by into it all making it all the better. There is no telling why it took so long to get the next film off the ground, but after re-watching this one you will be eager to revisit the fashion world of Zoolander and Hansel. In addition to the film this release includes deleted scenes, commentary, outtakes and so much more including new featurettes, footage, and more taking you further inside the world of Zoolander. As if this wasn’t enough the set also includes a collectible Zoolander headband embellished with Derek’s world-famous coif a look at Zoolander No. 2and a ticket worth up to $8.00 towards the sequel.
