Melody Thomas Scott has portrayed ‘Nikki Newman’, originally ‘Nikki Reed’, for over 30 years on ‘The Young and the Restless’. This week, her iconic daytime character died dramatically, or at least that’s how it initially appeared.
YR’s writing and production staff crafted a magnificent scene sequence that had ‘Nikki’ collapsing at the Newman Ranch during an intervention. Then, former ‘As the World Turns’ (‘Steve Andropoulos’), ‘Santa Barbara’ (‘Father Michael Donnelly) and ‘All My Children’ (‘Forrest Williams) star Frank Runyeon mystically appeared in a white room that resembled a property on Pearly Gates Boulevard. ‘Nikki’ seemed to be having an out-of-body experience, but was actually detailing recent memories to her counselor (‘Angel’) at the ‘Home’ facility where ‘Victor’ (Eric Braeden) had taken her for addiction rehabilitation therapy.
Savvy viewers knew that Thomas Scott advised in February, via her Twitter account, that she’d signed a three-year contract extension. So, obviously ‘Nikki’ isn’t being written off the show anytime soon, if ever.
Fans haven’t seen the last of Runyeon, who’s schedule to make another appearance on CBS’ reigning steamer on June 2. Whether ‘Nikki’ will be ready to check out (of the facility) at that time, remains unknown.
