“The X Factor” U.K. auditions that were to take place July 6 and July 7, 2015 at Eventcity in Manchester, England, have been cancelled because of the death of Simon Cowell’s mother, Julie, who reportedly died of a stroke on July 5, 2015. She was 89. Instead, the auditions will take place on the previously scheduled dates of July 8 and July 9, 2015. There is no word yet if the auditions that were scheduled for July 14 to July 17, 2015, at Wembley Arena in London will also be changed.
Cowell is a creator/executive producer of “The X Factor” U.K., which he launched in 2004. He left the show’s judging panel in 2011 to become a judge on “The X Factor” U.S., and he returned to “The X Factor” U.K. judging panel in 2014 after “The X Factor” U.S. was cancelled. In 2015, “The X Factor” U.K.’s other judges are Cowell, Rita Ora, Nick Grimshaw and Cheryl Fernandez-Versini.
According to E! News, the Cowell family released this statement on July 5, 2015: “Today our beloved mum Julie passed away. Anyone who had met her would know what a truly special and kind lady she was. We are heartbroken and will miss her terribly, but she is now at peace.”
A Cowell spokesperson added, “We would like to thank the media for kindly respecting Julie’s privacy throughout and we politely request continued privacy for the entire family at this particularly difficult time.”
Simon was very close to his mother and is no doubt devastated by this loss. His father, Eric, died of a heart attack in 1999. Simon named his son Eric (who was born on Feb. 14, 2014) after his father.
Simon Cowell’s brother Tony tweeted on July 5, 2015: “Very sad night tonight. We will all miss Mum so very much. She was the heart and soul of our family.”
Julie Cowell, a former dancer, is survived by her sons Simon, Tony, Michael and Nicholas, as well as her stepchildren John and June.
July 9, 2015 update: “The X Factor” auditions that were to take place at Wembley Arena in London on July 14, 2015, have been cancelled, according to an announcement made by the show. However, the Wembley Arena auditions set for July 15, July 16 and July 17 will continue as scheduled.
Applause Store, which handles free tickets for the auditions, issued this statement to people who had tickets for the July 14 auditions: “We are so sorry but it has just been confirmed to us that both recordings of The X Factor auditions in London on Tuesday 14th July have been cancelled due to a berievement.
