The Sacramento Surge lost a nail biter on the road Friday night against the Turlock Express in the club’s 2015-2016 Major Arena Soccer League season opener. It was a close match as both squads played a very spirited and competitive game. Newcomer midfielder Anibal Echeverria recorded a brace for Sacramento along with goals from Solomi Olajcde, Mike Tobie and Norman Levesque kept them in the game for all four periods. But a hat trick from Express defender Jose Barajas and a brace by midfielder Adrian Gutierrez was enough to power them past the Surge late in the game for the 6-5 victory.
A festive crowd of several hundred fans packed into the Turlock Indoor Soccer Arena to watch their Express take on their bitter HWY 99 rivals the Sacramento Surge. Their is no love lost between these two clubs as they have battled each other tooth and nail on the artificial pitch since 2012-2013 PASL-Pro season. Sacramento debuted a new goalie this year, number twenty-five Chris Welch along with several new additions to the club. Head Coach Mark Bickham has assembled a squad that is looking to add some fire power along with tighter defensive play.
Turlock drew first blood in the opening period when Arturo Pulido scored at 6 5:08 giving the Express a 1-0 lead. But the Surge would tie it up six minutes later when Solomi Olajcde would punch one in to knot it up at 1-1. The score would remained tied going into the second period until Sacramento would score off of a penalty kick giving them a 2-1. Turlock however would even it up a few seconds later making a 2-2 game, a score which would stand until halftime.
Sacramento and Turlock would open up the third period with both clubs battling out to a defensive stand still for the first seven and a half minutes. Jose Barajas would blast in an unassisted goal to take a 3-2 lead for the Express. The Surge would score twice in a span of three minutes when Norman Levesque and Mike Tobie powered past the tough Turlock defense to go up 4-3. Turlock would close out the third period with a goal from Jose Barajas with four seconds left on the clock to tie it up at 4-4.
The final period was decided by the foot of Turlock’s Adrian Gutierrez who stepped his game up and recorded a brace off a penalty kick and a goal in the final eighteen seconds for the 6-5 win. Sacramento played one monster of a game but sadly ended up on the short end of the stick. The Surge will continue their three game road trip to Las Vegas where they’ll take on the Legends Sunday, November 1st.
