A total lunar eclipse occurred on September 27, 2015 around 10pm eastern. This was a special eclipse due to the moon being a super moon as well, which means that the moon is actually closest to the earth in its orbit. The close distance to earth actually made the moon look larger than normal in the night sky. This led to a great and outstanding lunar eclipse.
Eclipses are caused when the sun, earth and moon all line up. There are two types of eclipses. The solar eclipse is caused when the moon gets in between the earth and the sun. These happen during the day and cannot be viewed without using an instrument of some kind because they can be damaging to the eye. Lunar eclipses on the other hand happen at night, last longer, and can be viewed by the un-aided eye. Lunar eclipses occur when the earth gets in between the sun and the moon, casting earth’s shadow onto the moon.
NASA scientists say that the next super moon lunar eclipse will occur in the year 2033. This means that this will be the best lunar eclipse visible to earth for the next 18 years. Many different science museums and observatory’s held different events tonight to teach people about the eclipse. Viewing the eclipse from a telescope will be very rewarding, especially for this rare occasion of the super moon lunar eclipse.

During a lunar eclipse, the full moon, which is normally white actually turns orange. This is due to the fact that the suns light bends around the earth due to the earths gravitational pull. The light gets bent and a reddish orange color then reflects onto the moon. This is the type of phenomenon that you can see when shining white light through a prism. This is also what causes a rainbow in the sky, but only the reddish orange wavelengths of light hit and reflect off of the moon.
