Got wrinkles? Did you know that it your excessive wrinkle damage could be due to where you live? Thanks to RoC Skincare and their new study released this week (with Sperling). The official 2015 RoC Wrinkle Index determined the U.S. states where the residents’ skin is most at risk from damage by their lifestyle and environment. Each state received a score (or what RoC called a “Wrinkle Index”), which measured the skin danger level for area dwellers.
The Top 10 Most Wrinkle-Prone States in America:
1 New York
3 West Virginia
6 New Hampshire
The irony of the top 10 is that none of these locations are what I would have expected to see. Florida, California and Texas – all being warm climate, ‘sun filled’ areas would have been the states thought to be the top contenders. I was wrong. What does this tell us about skin damage? The sun is NOT always the main culprit. In fact, one of the key findings from this year’s study, was that New York ranked #1 due in large part to the brutal winter of 2014-2015. New York suffered the largest drop in wintertime average temperature of all states. The state’s average commute time is also the second largest, exposing its residents to prolonged daily assault by the elements. The same went for Pennsylvania (#2) – noting it has the second-worst particulate pollution, long daily commutes, and smoking rates that are higher than the national average.
Dr. Debra Jaliman, MD, FAAD., – New York City-based board certified dermatologist – had some insight to the results. “Residents of every state have their share of positive and negative skin health factors so the exact cause of wrinkles can vary. However, there are several factors that can increase the rate at which skin ages, including high levels of stress, dangerous exposure to pollution and UVA/UBA radiation.”
What can you do to keep your skin safe year round? You might not have power against mother nature, but you do have some power to make positive change in your routines.
- Familiarize yourself with the RoC Wrinkle Ranking, and learn more about the critical factors that contribute to your state’s rank. Where do you rank in the list and what are the main factors for your area? Being aware and informed are half the battle.
- Identify how to eliminate certain risks and work to minimize exposure to others. Eat right, exercise regularly, drink at minimum 8 8-oz. glasses of water per day and do your best to live a zen lifestyle.
- Adopt practices and products that can help reduce and eliminate fine lines and wrinkles. Protect your skin – always. In short…stop and think and make wise choices when it comes to your skin. When exposed to the elements…cover up (be it sun or snow). Always apply/re-apply sunscreen with a high SPF no matter what the season – you can still burn your skin on the top of a mountain skiing (sometimes more so than the beach). Get in the good habit of using moisturizer with SPF during the day, and a retinol-based night moisturizer to help improve the appearance of aging skin while you sleep.
*The most significant metrics in the 2015 RoC State Wrinkle Index rankings were found to be (in no particular order) Winter 2014-15 – average low temperatures, Winter 2014-15 – different from average., commute times, number of sunny days, and skin cancer incidences
